Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has strongly condemned leaders who are undermining his role and labeling him as tribal.
Speaking in Kirinyaga County on June 15, Gachagua affirmed that President William Ruto and the people of Kenya are his only bosses to caution some leaders acting like his senior.
In his speech, the DP said that the President trusted him for the role of the Deputy President despite objections from some of the President’s close allies.
“Those who are uncomfortable, I’m sorry, there is nothing I can do about it,” he said.
Addressing accusations of tribalism, Gachagua dismissed the claims, asserting, “We are not tribal, we are just intelligent.”
In addition, the DP revisited the tense moments when members of the United Democratic Alliance were divided over the choice of Ruto’s running mante in the run up to the elections in 2022.
Political Tensions Amid Gachagua‘s Role
He described one particular incident when his spouse Pastor Dorcas Rigathi was chased away from the Karen residence of the Deputy President. At the time- said, some close allies had vowed to oppose his selection.
“He applied his mind and decided that the person who would assist him in delivering his role is Rigathi Gachagua,” he said.
“Some of the politicians who were there came and swore that I would only be picked over their dead bodies. Even my wife came at Karen and they chased him away. Some of them have never moved on but I was chosen.”
The Deputy President further defended his performance before and after election while citing the landslide victory UDA got in Mount Kenya by sweeping the majority seats.
His remarks come amid ongoing political tensions and calls for greater cohesion within the country. Gachagua also warned leaders who wanted to bring conflict between him and the president.

“I know my roles as the deputy president of Kenya, do not come here to lecture me on what I should do,” Gachagua asserted.
“Some people who are friends to my boss want to be my boss, if you are friends with the president keep your friendship and leave me alone,” he added.
MPs Attacking Gachagua

Additionally, Gachagua said that he was supporting the Population-based revenue sharing formula ‘One man one vote one shilling’ because he had the backing of the people.
“I want to ask all the leaders in Kenya to stop hurling abuses at Kenyans. They have eaten and are full now they want to vomit on the people. If you have had enough to eat that is fine, others who are still struggle give them their respect,” Gachagua said.
“I listen to the people so if you hear me say something it is the people who have spoken to me. I am always speaking on behalf of the people, and I know that i have the backing of so many other people,” he added.
