A section of Mt. Kenya leaders has criticised National Assembly Majority Leader and Member of Parliament (MP) for Kikuyu Constituency, Kimani Ichung’wah, over his claims that Kiambu County is not part of the region.
Ichung’wah made this pronouncement when President William Ruto met grassroots leaders from Kiambu County at State House, Nairobi, on August 27, 2025.
He stated that Kiambu has been considered part of the Mt. Kenya region, yet it is closer to Ngong Hills in Kajiado County and Kilima Mbogo in Machakos County.
Ichung’wah claimed that Kiambu is a distinct region in its own right and is not part of Mt. Kenya.
He added that Kiambu residents are ready to support President Ruto just like they did in 2022.
We have been christened the people of Mt. Kenya, but for those from Kiambu, the mountains they see are Ngong Hills and Kilima Mbogo. They have stated that they are a distinct region, and Kiambu is a separate region in its own right,” he said.
When we turn out in large numbers, it is because we are many, and we voted for you in 2022. For the work you are doing for us, in 2027, these people will decide.
Kuria Fires Back at Ichung’wah
Former Gatundu South Constituency MP Moses Kuria dismissed Ichung’wahs claims.
In a statement, Kuria said Kiambu suffered the ignominy of a cabal infamously referred to as the Kiambu Mafia during the reign of President Jomo Kenyatta.
Kuria stated that a new ‘Kiambu Mafia’ is emerging, attempting to separate itself from the wider Mt. Kenya region.
He criticised such plans, stating that Kiambu will always be part of the Mt. Kenya and the country as well.
Now there is a new Kiambu Mafia which is claiming that Kiambu will not be in the Mt Kenya region. Let me state categorically that Kiambu will always be part of Mt Kenya. And not an isolated Mt Kenya, but one that will be a proud part and parcel of our wonderful nation, Kenya.

Mt. Kenya Supporting One Candidate
Additionally, Kuria claimed that Mt. Kenya will support one presidential candidate in the 2027 election.
He mentioned that the region does not need to field a presidential candidate or a running mate to vote for one person in the next polls.
“And for avoidance of doubt, that Mt Kenya will pit all their 6 million votes in one basket in 2027. They will do so unconditionally, without demanding the Presidency, the running mate, or the Prime Cabinet Secretary; it is now clear that some of these positions have the same value as recycled toilet paper. So let’s relax and chew popcorn for another 92 weeks,” Kuria said.
Kiambu Senator Responds
Similarly, Kiambu Senator Karungo wa Thang’wa accused Ruto of using divide-and-rule tactics to try to isolate Kiambu County from the Mt. Kenya region.
He stated that the region is watching the President’s move and will remain united.
After failing to split Mt Kenya into East and West, Ruto has now hatched a fresh scheme with his maids to isolate Kiambu county from the rest of the mountain. This is nothing but divide and rule. The mountain is watching, united, and not for sale.

Residents Attending Ruto’s Event
Thang’wa also thanked Kiambu residents who attended the State House visit.
He argued that Mt. Kenya residents will accept money from the President but vote him out in 2027
“In other words, we know very well we are not voting for Ruto again, but we will still take his money and then kick him out at the ballot,” Thang’wa added.
Githunguri MP Gathoni Wamuchomba also slammed Ichung’wah for callin for the isolation of Kiambu.
He also criticized the MPs who were present at State House for focusing on Mt. Kenya politics instead of development.
“So, our biggest problem in Kiambu County is being a Mount Kenya County? So, all they were telling the President is that our roads are all done? Hospitals completed, aggregation center completed, coffee milk and tea farmers are happy, and all left is the business of separating us from other Mount Kenya regions?” she asked.
Wamuchomba stated that the leaders are political rejects who cannot hold political rallies in Kiambu.
He accused the team of trying to separate Kiambu from Mt. Kenya region after the strategy was tried on Mount Kenya East Versus West but failed.
These leaders depleted their political ideas and have lost touch with their voters. They can’t hold rallies in their own backyards; they can only ferry paid-up masses to secluded places to try and resuscitate their politics.
Kiambu County will not separate from other Mount Kenya counties. We vote as one and coexist.
