The Kenya Meteorological Department (KMD) has issued a weather advisory, warning of strong winds and large waves expected to affect at least 15 counties across the country.

The advisory issued on June 13, 2025, stated that strong southerly winds of more than 25 knots (12.9 m/s) will be experienced over the North-eastern, North-western, South-eastern lowlands and Coastal regions of Kenya.

“Strong southerly winds of more than 25 knots (12.9 m/s) being experienced over the North-eastern, North-western, South-eastern lowlands and Coastal regions of Kenya on Friday, 13 June 2025 are expected to strengthen to more than 30 knots (15.4 m/s) from Saturday, 14 June 2025 to Tuesday, 17 June 2025,” read part of the advisory.

Counties that will be affected will include Lamu, Kilifi, Mombasa, Kwale, Tana River, Taita Taveta, Marsabit, Turkana, Samburu, Isiolo, Mandera, Wajir, Garissa, Kitui, and Makueni.

Kenya Met Predicts Strong Winds & Large Waves

According to Kenya Met, wind speeds are likely to reduce to 25 knots (12.9 m/s) on Wednesday, 18 June 2025 while the wave heights are likely to be more than 2.5 meters over the Kenya coastal waters on Friday, 13 June 2025.

The wave heights are expected to increase to 2.8 meters from Saturday, June 14 to Tuesday, June 17 and are expected to reduce to below 2.4 meters on Wednesday, 18 June 2025.

Directives from KMD

Residents in the affected areas are advised to remain vigilant for potential gale-force winds and large waves over the Indian Ocean.

The strong winds may uproot trees, blow off roofs, and cause structural damage, while the high waves could reduce visibility and disrupt marine activities.

Kenya Met assured that it would continue to provide regular updates.
