Amazon has announced plans to lay off approximately 16,000 corporate employees globally as part of a broader organizational restructuring.
On January 28th, 2025, Amazon employees received a message from their CEO, Andy Jassy, about reconstruction plans.
“I want to let you know that we’re making additional organizational changes across Amazon that will impact some of our teammates. I recognize this is difficult news, which is why I’m sharing what’s happening and why,” read the message.
Why Amazon will lay off Employees
The move aims to streamline management layers, reduce bureaucracy, and accelerate the adoption of artificial intelligence across the company.

The reductions we are making today will impact approximately 16,000 roles across Amazon, and we’re again working hard to support everyone whose role is impacted.
Amazon CEO Andy Jassy explained that the latest reductions are part of ongoing efforts to strengthen the company.
“We’ve been working to strengthen our organization by reducing layers, increasing ownership, and removing bureaucracy,” Jassy said. “While many teams finalized their organizational changes in October, other teams did not complete that work until now.” noted Jassy.
Focus on AI and Strategic Investments
Despite the workforce reductions, Amazon emphasized that it is continuing to invest in strategic areas critical to its future. According to the company, the layoffs are part of a shift toward AI-driven operations that enable teams to work more efficiently and focus on growth opportunities.
Jassy highlighted the strategic nature of the changes: “While we’re making these changes, we’ll also continue hiring and investing in strategic areas and functions that are critical to our future. There’s a significant opportunity ahead in every one of our businesses.”
According to Industry analysts, Amazon’s restructuring mirrors a broader Big Tech trend in which companies are trimming traditional office roles while prioritizing AI.

Several companies are embracing AI and replacing their workers with AI machines. UPS, a global shipping company, laid off 34,000 employees in October 2025. Also, Pinterest announced its plan to lay off 15% of its workers as part of broader restructuring efforts
Amazon to Support Affected Employees
In the message, Amazon stated it is committed to assisting employees impacted by the cuts.
The company reassured its staff of support, including health insurance and severance pay.
“That starts with offering most US-based employees 90 days to look for a new role internally (timing will vary internationally based on local and country level requirements). Then, for teammates who are unable to find a new role at Amazon or who choose not to look for one, we’ll provide transition support including severance pay, outplacement services, health insurance benefits (as applicable), and more,” added Amazon CEO.
