President Vladimir Putin has defied Trump’s warnings as the runaway Russian oil tanker BELLA 1 was spotted off the southeast coast of Iceland, heading toward the North Sea.
The vessel, reportedly protected by Russian authorities, has triggered a massive American and British aerial presence around the North Coast of Scotland.
“Runaway Russian protected oil tanker BELLA 1 has just been spotted off the southeast coast of Iceland, approaching the North Sea. Massive American and British aerial activity is ongoing around the North Coast of Scotland,” read a statement.
This comes after the White House suggested that US military action to secure its interests in Greenland is always an option.
Russia Escorts BELLA 1 Amid U.S. Pursuit and Diplomatic Tensions
Russia has dispatched a submarine and other vessels to escort the BELLA 1 oil tanker, which is being pursued by the US across the Atlantic.
The ship has spent more than two weeks attempting to evade a US blockade of sanctions-hit oil tankers operating near Venezuela.
It began its journey in Iran and was bound for Venezuela to pick up oil, part of the shadow fleet that moves oil for Russia, Iran, and Venezuela.
However, the Ship-tracking data from MarineTraffic indicated that the vessel was nearing Iceland’s exclusive economic zone on Wednesday, January,7,2026.
The ship had been accused of breaking US sanctions and shipping Iranian oil.

Previously, Russia had filed a formal diplomatic request that the United States stop pursuing an oil tanker originally bound for Venezuela that had evaded US custody for almost two weeks.
The demarche was sent to the State Department on New Year’s Eve, as the vessel, called the Bella 1, appeared on Russia’s official register of ships under a new name.
Russia’s request came as the Trump administration had continued with intense efforts to end Moscow’s war in Ukraine.
BELLA 1’s Ownership, Sanctions, and Global Oil Transfers
Bella 1 is owned by Louis Marine Shipholding Enterprises.
Its Russian protection began in Iran.
The US Treasury sanctioned the vessel in June 2024 for allegedly transporting Iranian crude on behalf of designated terrorist organizations.

Between October 2021 and September 2025, the tanker directly exported 7.3 million barrels of Iranian crude oil and 3.7 million barrels of Venezuelan crude to China.
When signals resumed, the tanker was empty, suggesting it had transferred cargo at sea.
