The United States has suspended most visa services in Zimbabwe until further notice.
The US Embassy in Harare announced the decision on Wednesday, August 20, citing unspecified concerns with the government.
In a post on X, the embassy confirmed that routine visa services had been paused as of August 7.
According to a notice on the US State Department’s website, the suspension applies to all visa categories except most diplomatic and official visas.

US Embassy on Protecting Citizens and Way Forward
However, the Zimbabwean government has not publicly commented on the matter.
The pause comes against the backdrop of heightened US scrutiny on visa overstays and misuse, especially involving African countries.
According to a report by the US Department of Homeland Security, Zimbabwe had a visa overstay rate of 10.57% in 2023.
“The Trump Administration is protecting our nation and our citizens by upholding the highest standards of national security and public safety through our visa process,” added the statement.
Additionally, the statement indicated that applicants who were already scheduled for visa interviews will be informed on the way forward.
“We are always working to prevent visa overstay and misuse. Applicants with scheduled visa interviews will receive information once appointments can be rescheduled,” added the statement.

Trump’s Restrictions on African Countries
The Trump administration has already introduced new restrictions affecting several African nations.
Already, visa applicants from Zambia and Malawi will be required to pay bonds of up to $15,000 for certain visitor visas.
The same visa processing suspensions have also been imposed in Niger.
For Kenya, students who drop out, skip classes, or leave their academic programs without notifying their school risk having their visa revoked.
The move was part of efforts by US embassies worldwide to ensure international students understand their responsibilities and the consequences of non-compliance.
