The Kenya Power and Lighting Company (KPLC) has simplified access to prepaid electricity tokens by integrating several convenient digital payment platforms.
Customers can now buy tokens through M-Pesa, the *977# USSD code, and authorized banking channels.
Buying Kenya Power Tokens through M-Pesa
The M-Pesa Pay Bill service remains the most widely used method for purchasing electricity tokens.
To buy tokens, customers open the M-Pesa menu, select Lipa na M-Pesa, and choose Pay Bill.
The official business number 888880 is entered for prepaid meters, followed by the customer’s meter number as the account number.
The user then inputs the amount to pay, typically between KSh100 and KSh35,000, before entering their M-Pesa PIN to confirm the transaction.
Once the payment is processed, M-Pesa sends a confirmation SMS, followed by a separate message from Kenya Power containing a 20-digit token number.
Kenya Power customers must key this token number into the meter and press “Enter” to load the units. The process is instant, and tokens are automatically credited to the meter.
Buying Tokens via *977#
Kenya Power’s USSD service, accessible by dialing *977#, offers another fast and secure way to purchase tokens.
On the menu, customers select Option 1: Prepaid Services, then choose Buy Token. The system prompts for the meter number and payment amount.
Upon confirmation, the transaction is redirected to M-Pesa for payment completion.
After payment, the customer receives a text message with the 20-digit token number, which is entered into the meter to load electricity units.

If the SMS is delayed or lost, users can retrieve recent tokens by dialing *977# again, selecting Prepaid Services, and choosing Latest Token to access the last 3 purchased tokens.
Buying Tokens via Banks and Approved Agents
In addition to mobile platforms, Kenya Power has partnered with several banks and authorized vendors to facilitate token purchases.
Customers can use mobile banking apps or physical branches of partner banks such as KCB, Equity, and Co-operative Bank.
These banks have integrated Kenya Power’s token purchase service into their systems, allowing users to input their meter number and amount before confirming payment.
Customer Advisory
Kenya Power advises customers to always confirm their meter numbers before making payments to avoid purchasing tokens for the wrong account.
