New details have emerged about General Service Unit (GSU) officers visiting the Standard Group headquarters on Mombasa Road, Nairobi, following the circulation of a fake news headline involving Deputy Inspector General of Police, Eliud Lagat.
According to CCTV footage released by the Standard Group, a Probox vehicle with registration number KDD 055Z arrived at the media house on April 22, 2025, and drove directly into the parking lot.
Shortly after, three individuals entered the building and identified themselves as officers from the GSU.
On Wednesday, June 11, the Standard Group reported that the officers had visited the newsroom to inquire about a fabricated front-page headline titled The Richest Cop, which featured an image of DIG Lagat.
The headline had reportedly caused unrest within the police service. After a brief interrogation, the officers quickly left the premises.
Standard Group Raided Over Fake Publication of Eliud Lagat
A spot check by the Standard Group through the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) system revealed that the number plate on the Probox was fake. The number plate was registered to a black Subaru Forester.
Days later, another false front page titled “The Mafia Cop” surfaced, also bearing the Standard Group’s branding.
The article alleged that Lagat had strategically placed loyal officers in key positions to control revenue streams and intelligence flow. It also claimed he was under investigation by the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) for allegedly acquiring a Ksh 335.9 million property in Dubai.

Following the publication of this second false headline, DIG Lagat reportedly filed a formal complaint with the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) against Albert Ojwang.
On June 7, 2025, DCI officers arrested Ojwang at his family home in Kakot, Homa Bay County, around 3:30 p.m. He was first taken to Mawego Police Station, then transferred to Nairobi’s Central Police Station, where he later died while in custody.
Ojwang’s death has sparked widespread condemnation and growing calls for Lagat to resign or step aside, because he was the person behind the complaint.
Calls for DIG Resignation Mount
Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has demanded Lagat’s immediate suspension. He alleged that Lagat personally ordered Ojwang’s arrest and supervised his transfer to Nairobi.
“Suspending junior officers at Central Police Station is merely hoodwinking Kenyans. For any meaningful investigation to be conducted, Mr. Eliud Lagat must be suspended immediately,” Gachagua said.
Kakamega Senator Boni Khalwale echoed those sentiments, calling for Lagat’s resignation and arrest.

“Resignation is not enough. We want him arrested so he can record a statement from a police cell,” Khalwale stated.
Senate Majority Leader Aaron Cheruiyot also weighed in, urging Lagat to step aside while investigations are ongoing.
Speaking in the Senate on June 11, Cheruiyot, who described Lagat as a friend, said:
“I advise the Deputy Inspector General of Police, Mr. Lagat, that nobody has said you’re guilty. But for the country to appreciate what really happened, he should step aside until investigations are concluded.”
