Students who scored a D+ in the Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) can have career opportunities in the catering and hospitality industry through various certificate courses offered by recognised institutions.
Institutions offering catering and hospitality courses for students with a KCSE mean grade of D+ include Boma International Hospitality College and Zetech University.
At the same time, Chuka University, Kenya Utalii College, Carlile College, Doan College, KIPS Technical College, and NIBS Technical College.
These institutions offer a range of hospitality-related programs, including culinary operations, hotel management, food and beverage service, and front office operations.
Catering and Hospitality Courses
1. Boma International Hospitality College
Boma International Hospitality College (BIHC) in Nairobi offers three certificate programs with intakes in January, May, and September: Culinary Operations, which introduces students to kitchen environments and food production.
Hospitality Operations focuses on front office, housekeeping, and food and beverage services, and Baking and Pastry, which covers artisan baking, chocolate work, and frozen desserts.
All programs require a KCSE mean grade of D+ with a D+ in English or Kiswahili and a D- in Mathematics or any science.
2. Zetech University
Zetech University offers a Certificate in Hospitality and Tourism Management that covers hotel management, tourism operations, service quality, and crisis management.
Applicants must have a KCSE aggregate grade of D+, with a D in English or Kiswahili and a D- in a related subject such as Mathematics, Business Studies, Geography, or Computer Studies.

3. Doan College
Doan College provides practical certificate programs in Food & Beverage Production and Services, Catering and Accommodation Operations, and International Culinary Arts, all requiring a KCSE grade of D+ or D plain.
4. Chuka University
Chuka University offers a Certificate in Hospitality and Tourism Management, requiring a D+ with at least a D+ in English or Kiswahili. While at KIPS Technical College, a Certificate in Hospitality & Catering requires D+.

NIBS Technical College runs a Certificate in Catering and Accommodation Operations, also requiring a D+, and is examined by the Kenya National Examinations Council (KNEC).

Kenya Utalii College, a prestigious hospitality training institution based in Nairobi, offers certificate programs in Food Production, Food & Beverage Service and Sales, Housekeeping and Laundry, and Front Office Operations, all available to students with a KCSE mean grade of D+ or equivalent.
Additionally, Nairobi Institute of E-Commerce (NIE College) offers a Certificate in Catering and Accommodations to applicants with a KCSE mean grade of D+.
