The Kenya Universities and Colleges Central Placement Service (KUCCPS) CEO, Agnes Wahome, has explained how students who sat for the 2023 Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) exams can still apply for courses.
Speaking during a webinar on Saturday, April 26, Wahome said students who missed the initial application window cannot now apply for courses through the KUCCPS portal.

She clarified that the current placement cycle is only open to candidates who sat for the 2024 KCSE exams. This is the latest cohort.
“I need to address this quickly because I have seen it come up a lot. Students who sat for their KCSE in 2023 and did not apply to university are asking why they cannot access the system to apply for a university program,” Wahome said.

“Every year, we open applications only for the latest KCSE cohort. So, if you did your exam in 2024, you are the only group eligible for university applications through the portal.”
KUCCPS CEO Explains How 2023 KCSE Students Can Apply for Courses
However, Wahome noted that students who missed applying in 2023 can still make a special request for assistance.

“We have a platform for them, but they need to be guided. They should get in touch with one of our officers at the nearest Huduma Centre or write to us through our email, and we will guide them,” she explained.
KUCCPS deployed officers at 63 universities and colleges, KUCCPS offices and all the 58 Huduma Centres across the country to guide and support applicants.

Students are required to send an email to info@kuccps.ac.ke and include their index number, the year they sat for the exam, their telephone number, and their email address.
KUCCPS will then get in touch to guide them through what is referred to as the late application process.
Students Can Only Apply for Degree Courses at OUK on the Portal
Wahome further emphasized that those who missed the 2023 application window cannot apply for degree courses through regular placement unless it is for the Open University of Kenya (OUK).
“I need to make it very clear: there is no way you can apply for a degree through KUCCPS unless you are applying to the Open University,” she stated.
“The Open University is a special institution where all the training takes place online. Applications are open throughout the year, and you can apply anytime through our portal.”

She added that anyone who sat for KCSE even many years ago or already holds a degree is eligible to apply for programs at the Open University, provided they attained a minimum of a C+ grade.
“We will place you anytime of the year as long as you meet the requirements,” Wahome said.
Form Four leavers who sat KCSE examinations in the years 2000 to 2024 and attained mean grades of C to E are eligible to apply for Level 4 (Artisan Certificate), Level 5 (Craft Certificate) and Level 6 (Diploma) programmes offered in TVET institutions.
They can also apply for Diploma in Teacher Education Programmes. The deadline for application is April 30, 2025.
