On June 12, TikTok took a major step toward ensuring its users have a safer and more secure experience on the platform.
Kim Albarella, TikTok’s Head of Global Security, announced the rollout of enhanced safety features through a digital safety and privacy guide.
This move was part of TikTok’s ongoing efforts to empower users to take control of their online environment and maintain their digital well-being.
“Whether you’re new to TikTok or use it regularly, it’s important to protect your privacy and stay in control of your digital experience,” the Head of TikTok Global Security said.
“With a range of customizable settings and built-in safety tools, TikTok empowers users to create a safer, more positive environment tailored to their needs,” she added.
TikTok Step by Step Guide to Digital Safety and Privacy
The guide outlined several key steps designed to help both new and existing users better protect their accounts and customise their experience.
The first step involves checking privacy settings. Users can choose between public and private profiles, which gives them control over who views their content.
A newly introduced Security Checkup tool also allows users to review and strengthen their account security settings with ease.
Also, the platform encourages users to enable two-factor authentication and passkeys. These security features offer an extra layer of protection that helps prevent unauthorised access.
Once the account is secured, users can set their content preferences to shape what appears in their For You feed. This includes filtering out certain keywords, adjusting topics of interest, and even refreshing the feed entirely.
Direct messaging disabled for under 16
Another crucial step is managing messaging preferences. Users can decide who is allowed to message them, reducing the risk of unwanted interactions. Direct messaging is disabled for users under 16 as part of TikTok’s commitment to protecting younger audiences.

The app also offers digital wellbeing tools to help users manage their time on the app. These include options to set daily screen time limits and schedule screen-time breaks. The aim is to promote more mindful and healthy usage of the platform.
For those with specific needs, TikTok’s accessibility features provide further support. Users can adjust text size, enable captions, and filter videos that may trigger photosensitivity.
In-app activity management
The app is now also compatible with screen readers at the device level, improving navigation for users with visual impairments.

Additionally, the Activity Centre allows users to manage their in-app activity in one place, including access to history, search records, comments, and login activity.
Lastly, users can check the status of any content they’ve reported and monitor their account standing through the Safety Centre, accessible under Settings and Support.
With these tools, TikTok aims to foster a safer, more personalised, and more informed user experience.
