Chief Justice Martha Koome has revealed the last moments of the late High Court judge and member of the Judicial Service Commission (JSC) David Majanja.
In a statement, Koome has narrated that Majanja was rushed to hospital after falling ill on Monday, July 8.
The judge, according to Koome, underwent a successful surgery and was moved to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) to recuperate. However, he passed away while undergoing treatment on Wednesday, July 10.
“Majanja passed away last evening at The Nairobi Hospital. He fell ill on Monday 8th July, 2024 and was taken to the hospital, where he was scheduled for surgery on Wednesday, July 10, 2024.
“Although he successfully underwent surgery in the morning and was moved to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) to recuperate, he unfortunately passed away last evening,” read the statement in part.

At the same time, Koome eulogized the judge saying that he served the judicial Service Commission (JSC) the JSC with distinction.
Justice Majanja was first appointed to the High Court in 2011. He served as a judge in several court stations, including the Constitutional and Human Rights Division, Homa Bay, Migori, Kisumu, Kisii, and the Commercial and Tax Division.
At the time of his passing, he was serving at the Milimani High Court Civil Division.
Moreover, in 2019, Majanja was elected as a commissioner of the JSC representing the Kenya Magistrates and Judges Association.
After completing a first five-year term, he was re-elected for a second term in May 2024.
Additionally, he served as the Chairperson of the Human Resource Management Committee of the JSC and was a member of the Audit, Governance and Risk Management Committee and the Learning and Development Committee.

President William Ruto described Majanja as a brilliant lawyer who joined the Bench after an exemplary spell at the Bar.
On the other hand, DP Gachagua stated that had an illustrious career describing him as a prolific gifted mind that immensely contributed to redefining the legal profession and the justice system.
“My deepest condolences to the family, friends, the learned friend’s fraternity and our Nation. We pray that the family finds solace in the Lord at this lowest moment, as they come to terms with this big loss,” Gachagua said.
Additionally, Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka expressed his sadness over the loss of the judge saying that he had a strong legal mind and was very well respected, which is why he was elected as a Commissioner of the JSC.
“May his legacy live on. I also pray that the Almighty God will comfort Justice Majanja’s family and loved ones in this hour of grief,” he said
