Two people have been confirmed dead and several others injured in a road accident along the Nakuru-Eldoret highway on Saturday, March 16 at around 9:40pm.
Reports indicate that an 11-seater matatu ferrying Eritrean citizens headed to Eldoret rammed into a truck that was packed by the roadside around the Sayatu area.
A Police report filed at Salgaa police station showed that the truck had mechanical problems and was left stationary beside the road without any warning signs.
The injured passengers were admitted to Nakuru Level Five Hospital where the two succumbed to injuries.
Additionally, the dead passengers were taken to the Nakuru County morgue awaiting identification and postmortem.
“The survivors were all rushed to Nakuru County Hospital and their names could not be established immediately due to language barrier. Two unknown died while undergoing treatment while twelve others who sustained both serious and slight injuries have been admitted at the said facility,” the police report read.
Kapsabet High School Bus Accident
The incident occurred hours after a student and a teacher at Kapsabet High School were killed in another accident in Baringo County earlier in the afternoon.
Kenya Red Cross revealed that the bus they were travelling in rolled several times along the Marigat-Kabarnet Road.
Kapsabet High School’s principal also confirmed the accident, stating that the bus was carrying students who were headed for an academic trip to Baringo County.

Gachagua & Governor Sang Visit the Institution
Deputy President (DP) Rigathi Gachagua visited the school alongside Nandi Governor Stephen Sang, Kericho Senator Aaron Cheruiyot and Basic Education Principal Secretary Belio Kipsang.
The leaders condoled with the school’s administration and the families of the affected students.
Gachagua assured the school fraternity of the government’s support after the accident.
“We pray for a quick recovery for the injured who are receiving treatment in various hospitals in Baringo and Uasin Gishu,” he said.
Governor Sang reported that the students are currently undergoing treatment at Kabarnet County Referral Hospital and Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital.
“We are pleased to report that our students are all in stable condition. We are grateful to the Kituro High School community for accommodating the larger group of Kapsabet Boys students who were taking part in the same tour,” he said.

NTSA Accident Statistics
The bus had 63 people on board: 61 learners, a teacher, and the driver.
The National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) road safety status revealed a decreased number of fatalities in 2023/2024.
According to NTSA, 2,080 fatalities were recorded as of December 31, 2023, compared to 2,378 registered during the same period in the previous year.
However, 10,115 serious and slight injuries were reported compared to 8,604 in the 2022/2023 year.
Pedestrians recorded the highest number of deaths, 788 followed by motorcyclists, 55 and passengers, 324.
Besides, other categories of causalities included pillion passengers (190), drivers (184) and pedal cyclists (39).
Similarly, pedestrians and motor cyclists recorded the highest number of fatalities with 847 and 631 respectively in 2022/2023.
This was followed by passengers (446), pillion passengers (216), drivers (211) and pedal cyclist (27).
