A document shared online alleging that Mandera County awarded a student Ksh400,000 bursary to study in a university in Uganda has stirred uproar among Kenyans.
Some indicated that the student was a relative to the governor while others were concerned at the level of misappropriation of funds within the country governments.
Politician Robert Alai shared the document originally indicating that it had been circulated in different WhatsApp groups.
‘Mandera governor has awarded his kins bursary worth Ksh400,000. The document has been circulating in local WhatsApp forums,” stated the caption to the post.
Further detailed information on the document indicated that it was signed on July 30, 2023, for a male student admitted at Kampala International University.
At the same time, the document indicated that the student was expected to report to the institution on Wednesday, August 23, 2023.

Kenyans Call on EACC for Investigations
One user on X named, Naipamei Kaikai, called on the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commision (EACC) to investigate the matter adding that nepotism was unacceptable.
“This level of nepotism should not be acceptable in our society in the 21st century. EACC Kenya, we need such leaders to be held accountable,” she stated.
Subsequently, the sentiments were backed by 14 others including user Gachie Nyoro who added that the commission ought to take the governor to court over the matter.

“If this is true, we expect EACC to move swiftly and take him to court. The county assembly should also suspend any other business and start the process of impeaching him,” the user wrote.
“The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) should be on his bedside by now,” he added.
Concerns Over Bursary Awards to Private Institutions
On the other hand, others raised concerns over bursary funds being used to finance the education of students in universities abroad.
Also, some individuals wondered if it was a common occurrence in Mandera County or any other county in the country.
“Since when did bursaries start catering for private institutions, more so those outside the country?” one user questioned.
Mnadera Governor Mohamed Adan Khalif has since not issued any statement on the matter.
