President William Ruto’s daughter Charlene Ruto has been criticized by a section of Kenyans online following her remarks on the ongoing campaign against femicide cases in the country.
Charlene took to her social media account on January 30, 2024, expressing her stand on the recently reported gender-based violence incidents in the country.
“As a young woman, I am appalled, shocked, disturbed and saddened by the regularity of the extreme gender-based violence incidents that have occurred in the recent days,” she said.
She further went on to highlight the cases as a black and white issue fueled by some members of the society.
According to her, individuals involved have a backward attitude which is disappointing and dangerous for the future of sisters, daughters, young women, and the population at large.

However, following her remarks on femicide incidents, netizens came blazing at her, highlighting her silence over the matter.
A user named Victor Patience Oyuko called out Charlene noting that she should use her position to advocate and create awareness among young women.
“We all know you aren’t in the same position as the victims of Femicide and many other vulnerable girls and young women.
“Your chances of becoming a victim are less than 1%. When will you advise young women to stop loving free money? Why not hold empowerment forums to create awareness in how women can avoid such situations/circumstances?” posed Oyuko.
On the other hand, Boniface Mwangi another user highlighted Charlene’s timing for the remarks, which according to him came in late.
“A week later huh?? When the matter is sinking,” he said.
Another user named Sophia also reacted to her remarks noting, “You are speaking out a week later because you went for photoshoot first?”

Also, the protestors were joined by politicians and various stakeholders to condemn the rise in reported cases of women being killed brutally in the country.
This came following reports of women murdered in Airbnb’s in Nairobi, unearthing other cases in different parts of the country.
The Director of Criminal Investigations (DCI) Mohamed Amin has since promised to use all available resources to end gender-based killings in the country, especially those targeted on women.
In a January 30 statement, he noted that the measures will involve formation of a special team tasked with investigating and closing femicide cases in the country.
The team, according to the DCI will include criminal intelligence analysts and forensic experts as well as a collaboration with other government stakeholders.
“These killings have cast a dark shadow over our safety and security endeavors; we must put this menace to end with remarkable speed and finality,” Amin stated.
