The Directorate of Criminal Investigations has arrested two people believed to have helped fugitive Kelvin Kang’ethe in his escape from the Muthaiga Police Station where he was held in remand.
Speaking to the press on February 13, 2024, DCI boss Mohamed Amin revealed that detectives probing the case arrested the two people as part of intensified efforts to trace the fugitive.
“The issue of Kelvin Kang’ethe so far so good we have progressed well. As of today, we have arrested two people who facilitated the escape of the fugitive,” said Amin.
Amin further stated the DCI will take action against any person who aided or abetted in the escape of Kelvin from police custody.
On Sunday, February 11, Citizen TV reported that detectives probing the escape have focused their attention on the man believed to have arranged the getaway for the suspect moments after he ran from Muthaiga Police Station.
Arrests made
Kevin Kang’ethe’s brother and his girlfriend, considered a person of interest were reportedly arrested on Monday, February 12, night and have been included in the investigations as detectives continue their manhunt.

Meanwhile, investigations by the detectives have established that Kang’ethe has been to the counties of Machakos, Kiambu, and Nairobi since his escape after successfully tracing his phone’s signal.
Investigations into the case have been on top gear in the past few days with officers laboring to unravel the mystery of how Kang’ethe managed to escape from custody and his whereabouts.
The Kenyan citizen who had been living in the United States escaped to Kenya in late 2023 after the death of his girlfriend Margaret Mbitu who was found dead inside an airport in Massachusetts.
Since then, Kang’ethe has been on the radar of police both from Kenya and the US in connection with the gruesome murder where the lady was found with stab wounds.
Kang’ethe arrested
He managed to spend three months while on the run before he was finally arrested in Nairobi’s Parklands area while leaving an entertainment joint in late January.
The United States (US) praised authorities from Kenya following the arrest in a January 30,2024 statement.
“Embassy Nairobi commends the efforts of Kenyan law enforcement for apprehending Kenyan fugitive Kevin Kangethe, suspected to have murdered Margaret Mbitu in Massachusetts sometime between October 30 and November 4, 2023,” read part of the statement.

Following his arrest, the US government made a formal application to extradite him to the country where he was expected to face charges including first degree murder.
Margaret’s lifeless body was discovered inside a vehicle at Boston’s Logan Airport in November last year.
She was first reported missing by Brockton Area Multi Services, a charitable organization headquartered in Brockton, where she was working as an employee.
Authorities believe that Mbitu was killed by Kevin Kang’ethe, based on evidence recovered from the vehicle registered under his name.
Prosecutors in the State of Massachusetts charged the forty-year-old Kenyan for the suspected homicide case.
