The police officer who injured his forearm after detonating a teargas cannister during the #OccupyParliament protests is recuperating at a Nairobi Hospital.
According to a Police OB report filed at the Central Police Station on Tuesday, the officer detonated a tear gas cannister and delayed releasing it thereby exploding in his hands.
As a result, the officer identified as Chief Inspector (CI) David Maina of Rapid deployment unit (RDU) severely injured his hands from the wrist losing both forearms.
“David Maina of RDU detonated a tear gas canister and delayed releasing it thereby exploding in his hands, as a result his two hands were severely injured from the wrist losing both forearms,” read part of the release.
Likewise, his colleague Mildred Amoit Elisha of Embakasi Police Station sustained minor injuries on the chest.
The law enforcement officers were rushed to the Nairobi West hospital where David was admitted and taken to theatre while Mildred is still under observation.

“They were both rushed to Nairobi West Hospital whereby David Maina was admitted and taken to theater while the other office is still under observation in the same facility,” revealed the release.

In videos seen by The Kenya Times, the officer blew up his hands as he tried to disperse protesters who had turned up for the Anti-Finance Bill protests in Nairobi, held on 18th June ,2024.
In a statement on Wednesday, Embakasi East Member of parliament (MP) Babu Owino assured Kenyans that the two-law enforcement officers were doing well.
