A tragic road accident at Kamara in Mau Summit along the Nakuru-Eldoret Highway has claimed the lives of six people after the 14-seater matatu they were traveling in collided head-on with a truck.
The accident occurred at around 8:30 p.m. on Friday, July 3, in the Nyanja area of Kuresoi North Sub-County.
Kuresoi North Sub-County Police Commander John Kimutai said the crash involved a matatu travelling from Nakuru to Eldoret and a trailer that was heading towards Nakuru.
Preliminary investigations indicate that the trailer veered into the matatu’s lane before colliding with the vehicle, which was carrying 11 passengers.
Tragic Nakuru-Eldoret Highway Accident Leaves Six Dead
Kimutai said five people, among them the matatu driver, were pronounced dead at the scene after sustaining fatal injuries in the impact.
A sixth victim later died while undergoing treatment at Londiani Sub-County Hospital, while five other passengers were admitted with injuries.
“The accident occurred at around 8:30 pm. A matatu belonging to Eldoret Crossroad Sacco was heading towards Nakuru from Eldoret. A trailer ascending Nyanja slope swerved to the right and collided head-on with the matatu, fatally injuring five people on the spot,” Kimutai said.

Photos seen by The Kenya Times show the mangled wreckage of the 14-seater matatu after the fatal collision with a truck at Kamara in Mau Summit along the Nakuru-Eldoret Highway.
The front section of the matatu was severely crushed, with the roof buckled and the driver’s side extensively damaged, illustrating the force of the impact.
Rescue workers were seen inspecting the wreckage, while other passersby stood nearby.

Other Accidents
The latest tragedy at Kamara in Mau Summit along the Nakuru-Eldoret Highway came just months after another major multi-vehicle crash at the same blackspot.
In March, eight vehicles, including three cargo trucks, three matatus, a Probox and a private car, were involved in a collision that caused widespread disruption along the busy highway.
The crash created chaotic scenes as emergency responders rushed to rescue the injured, clear the wreckage and restore the flow of traffic.
In June, five people lost their lives in a head-on collision involving a trailer and a saloon car along the Njoro-Nakuru Road in Nakuru County.
According to police, the accident occurred in the Kenyatta area as the trailer was travelling towards Njoro while the saloon car was heading in the opposite direction.
The two vehicles collided head-on, killing all five occupants of the smaller vehicle.
Four of the victims were pronounced dead at the scene, while the fifth succumbed to injuries while undergoing treatment at the hospital, police said.
