National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang’ula narrowly escaped injury after slipping while attempting to step onto a church podium during a fundraiser at St Peter’s Mungore ACK Church in Bumula, Bungoma County, on October 4.
The incident occurred as Wetang’ula approached the podium during the event, with a video circulating on social media showing him losing his balance and falling forward.
Farouk Kibet, who was nearby, quickly moved to assist the Speaker after the fall, helping him regain his footing as people at the event reacted to the incident.
Two other men also rushed to assist, and together with Kibet, they helped the Speaker back onto his feet.
Wetang’ula is seen composing himself, dusting off his clothes, and straightening his glasses before rejoining the proceedings.
In the footage, the Speaker is seen holding his right upper arm, appearing to indicate discomfort after the fall.
After the near-injury incident, the congregation was asked to cheer for Wetang’ula as he took his place on the podium.
“Wapi nduru ya Weta, Wapi Nduru ya Weta?” Kibet asked the crowd to cheer for the speaker.

Fall Linked to 2027 General Elections
Wetang’ula’s incident has been connected to the political contest expected to define the 2027 General Election.
Among the reactions were remarks that “There will be signs,” while others suggested that politicians were not even waiting for 2027 to ‘fall,’ as some cited that his fall is an indication that God was against his political stand.
Some members of the public described the incident as an indication that power is bound to end.
Additionally, some people have referred to Wetang’ula as a “flying speaker” and joked about leaders “diving” before 2027.
The political interpretation comes as Wetang’ula remains active in efforts to mobilize support for President William Ruto ahead of the 2027 polls.
Western Kenya leaders have also backed Wetang’ula for the deputy presidency in 2027.

Wetang’ula Steps Up Campaign for Ruto’s 2027 Re-election
Wetang’ula has repeatedly urged the Luhya community to back Ruto for a second term, saying the region has a political understanding with the President. In January 2026, he said Western Kenya supported Ruto in 2022 and would continue supporting him in 2027.
The Speaker has since held rallies, church fundraisers and empowerment events in Western Kenya, where he has urged residents to support Ruto’s administration.
Working alongside President Ruto’s aide Farouk Kibet, the speaker is holding rallies as part of the mobilization drive, visiting parts of Kakamega, Bungoma and Trans Nzoia to rally support for Ruto’s second-term bid.
The campaign has involved several Western Kenya leaders, including Kakamega Governor Fernandes Barasa, Bungoma Governor Kenneth Lusaka, Kericho Senator Aaron Cheruiyot, Sirisia MP John Waluke, Kimilili MP Didmus Barasa, Likuyani MP Innocent Mugabe and Butere MP Tindi Mwale.
Wetang’ula has cited government projects, including road construction, healthcare facilities and the revival of sugar factories, while making the case for Ruto’s re-election.
At the same time, some Western Kenya leaders have backed Wetang’ula for the Deputy President position in 2027, positioning him for the presidency in 2032.
