Several people are feared dead following a serious road accident involving a heavy commercial trailer and two public service vehicles along the Nairobi–Nakuru highway near Kikopey on January 19,2026.

According to eyewitness accounts and early reports from the scene, the trailer lost control before veering off the road and ramming into two oncoming matatus.

The impact caused extensive damage, trapping passengers inside the vehicles and leaving debris scattered across the busy highway.

Images and video circulating from the scene show the container-laden trailer resting off the carriageway, with one matatu crushed beneath its rear section as rescue efforts continued.

Bystanders and first responders attempted to assist victims, some of whom appeared critically injured.

Traffic along the Nairobi–Nakuru highway was temporarily disrupted as police and emergency services moved in to secure the area and begin rescue operations.

Motorists have been advised to use alternative routes as ambulances rush the injured to nearby hospitals.

Police have not yet issued an official statement confirming the number of fatalities or injuries, but authorities said investigations are underway to establish the cause of the accident.

Preliminary indications point to brake failure or loss of control, though this has not been formally confirmed.

Nairobi-Nakuru Highway Blackspot

The Nairobi–Nakuru highway has in recent weeks recorded a worrying rise in serious road accidents, reinforcing its reputation as one of Kenya’s most dangerous transport corridors.

Multiple fatal crashes have been reported at known black spots including Salgaa, Sachang’wan, Kikopoy and near Gilgil, often involving heavy commercial vehicles and public service matatus.

On December 31, 2025, a 14-seater matatu was torched by angry boda-boda riders after it knocked down and killed a motorcyclist along the Nairobi–Nakuru Highway at Gitaru, causing significant traffic disruption.

Early in the new year, on January 3, 2026, a trailer and a Great Rift matatu collided at Kikopey, Gilgil on the Nakuru–Nairobi Highway, leaving several feared dead and others injured.

On January 4 and 5, 2026, separate crashes involving public service vehicles — including a bus and matatu at Karai — resulted in further injuries and loss of life.

In several cases, trucks and trailers have lost control while descending steep sections of the road, ploughing into oncoming traffic or roadside businesses with devastating consequences.

Police reports and eyewitness accounts frequently cite brake failure, speeding, fatigue and poor vehicle maintenance as recurring factors.

The high volume of long-distance freight traffic, coupled with aggressive overtaking and limited enforcement, has further compounded the risk.

Road safety advocates have renewed calls for stricter inspection of heavy vehicles, mandatory rest periods for drivers and improved signage at accident-prone sections.

Authorities have also been urged to accelerate long-promised upgrades to dangerous stretches of the highway to stem the growing toll of deaths and injuries.

NTSA Takes Charge

The National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) has suspended the operating licences of four public transport operators, including long‑distance bus company Guardian Coach Limited, following investigations into fatal road crashes and repeated safety violations during the December 2025 festive travel period.

In a statement issued on January 10, 2026, NTSA said the action followed non‑compliance with the Traffic Act, the Public Service Vehicle Regulations, 2014, and operational standards under Kenya Standard KS 2295:2023.

Guardian Coach was linked to a fatal crash on January 6 along the Nairobi–Naivasha Road at Kimende.

NTSA directed the operator to submit 24 vehicles cited for speeding for speed limiter checks and compliance inspection.

The Authority also cancelled PSV endorsements of 18 drivers, suspended their licences for 90 days, and ordered their immediate removal from driving duties.

Between January 1 and November 13, 2025, NTSA recorded 21,042 crash victims, including 4,195 fatalities and thousands of serious and minor injuries.

4,458 people were killed on Kenyan roads in 2025, marking a 3.4% increase from 4,311 deaths recorded in 2024.
