A new federal indictment has been filed against former FBI Director James Comey, marking a renewed legal clash between him and the administration of U.S. President Donald Trump.
The charges, brought by the Justice Department, are linked to a social media post that officials say may have been interpreted as a threat against the president.
According to reporting by the Daily Mail, the case centers on an Instagram image posted by Comey in May last year.
The image showed seashells arranged to form the number “8647,” accompanied by a caption describing it as a “cool shell formation” seen during a beach walk.
Social media post at the center of the case
The number “86” is widely used in American slang to mean removing or discarding something, but it can also carry a more serious meaning associated with violence.
The number “47” is understood as a reference to Trump’s current position as the 47th president.
Trump allies argued that the combination amounted to a coded message calling for harm against the president. At the time, then, Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem said the U.S. Secret Service would investigate the post.
Comey deleted the image the same day, stating he was unaware that some people associate the numbers with violent intent.

Despite the deletion, the post prompted a response from federal authorities, including an interview conducted by Secret Service agents.
Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard publicly criticized Comey at the time, saying the situation raised concerns about the president’s safety.

This is not the first time Comey has faced charges in recent months. He was previously indicted by a federal grand jury in Virginia on allegations tied to statements made during a 2020 Senate Judiciary Committee hearing.
Those charges included making false statements to Congress and obstructing a congressional proceeding.
However, that earlier case was dismissed in November after a federal judge ruled that the prosecutor, Lindsey Halligan, had not been lawfully appointed.
The new indictment represents a shift in legal strategy by the Justice Department, now under Acting Attorney General Todd BlancheWhitePam Bondi.
Reports indicate that the earlier investigation into the Instagram post had been dropped under Bondi but was revived after Blanche assumed office. The Justice Department is expected to outline details of the new charges in a scheduled press conference.
Broader political tensions and pattern of cases
Since then, Comey has remained a vocal critic of Trump, frequently appearing in media interviews and public discussions.

The timing of Comey’s new indictment comes shortly after a reported security incident involving an alleged plot against the president at a high-profile Washington event, adding to concerns about threats against public officials.
Why this matters
The renewed case against Comey raises questions about the use of federal legal powers in politically sensitive situations, especially when it involves critics of a sitting president. It also shows how social media posts can be interpreted in ways that carry legal consequences.
The case is likely to draw scrutiny over whether the prosecution is based on legitimate security concerns or reflects broader political tensions within the U.S. government.
