Democratic Congresswoman Sheila Cherfilus-McCormick is facing mounting pressure to step down after being linked to a $5 million financial misconduct case, but she has made it clear she will not resign.
The Florida lawmaker is under scrutiny ahead of a key hearing by the House Ethics Committee, which is expected to determine whether disciplinary action should be taken against her.
The case has escalated to the point where Republican lawmakers are pushing for a full expulsion vote in the United States House of Representatives. Representative Greg Steube has pledged to force such a vote regardless of the committee’s recommendation, signaling a rare and serious move against a sitting member of Congress.
Despite the growing calls for her resignation, Cherfilus-McCormick has remained defiant. “For those asking whether I plan to resign, the answer is no,” she said, adding, “This is not the time to abandon the district.”
Allegations and political reactions
The controversy centers on findings that Cherfilus-McCormick was involved in more than two dozen ethics violations tied to financial misconduct.

According to the ethics panel, the case involves allegations that over $5 million in disaster relief funds were redirected to her campaign through payments to a healthcare company linked to her family.
The congresswoman has denied wrongdoing, even as she faces a separate criminal indictment filed in 2025. Prosecutors allege additional offenses, including a scheme involving campaign donations and filing false tax returns. If convicted, she could face significant prison time.
Democrats Reaction
The situation has divided lawmakers. Some Democrats have begun to break ranks, with Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez indicating she would support expulsion if the congresswoman refuses to step down. Others in party leadership have taken a more cautious approach.
House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries said lawmakers would review the case after the ethics process concludes. “We will proceed in a manner consistent with our approach… to always and at all times follow the facts and apply the relevant law,” Jeffries stated.

Meanwhile, House Speaker Mike Johnson has voiced support for expulsion, citing what he described as serious findings from the bipartisan ethics panel.
Political and legal uncertainty ahead
The outcome of the case remains uncertain, as expelling a member of Congress requires a two-thirds majority vote in the House. This means support from both Republicans and Democrats would be necessary to remove Cherfilus-McCormick from office.
Campaign finance filings show she is dealing with significant debt and limited funds, while several challengers have announced plans to run against her in the upcoming primary election.
Legal proceedings are also ongoing. A federal judge recently approved a delay in her criminal trial until early 2027, giving both the defense and prosecution more time to prepare. The delay ensures that the legal battle will continue alongside the political fallout.
