House Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries fired back at President Donald Trump on Saturday with a pointed social media post that quickly attracted attention across party lines.
Jeffries shared a screenshot of Trump’s Truth Social message from the night before. In it, Trump called Jeffries a “low IQ Democrat Minority Leader” and labeled him a “THUG” who poses a danger to the country.
Jeffries shared the screenshot on his X handle on May 2, and added a simple caption: “Do you need a hug? Be Best.”
The response directly references Melania Trump’s “Be Best” initiative, which focused on children and on anti-bullying efforts.
The sarcasm in Jeffries’ post
The sarcasm in the post stood out, as he appeared to turn Trump’s own attack back on him while invoking the first lady’s famous campaign slogan.
Jeffries literally questioned why President Trump keeps on bullying opponents, yet his wife, First Lady Melania, has always preached the anti-bullying gospel.
The exchange comes days after a shooting incident at a Washington, D.C. hotel tied to the White House Correspondents’ Dinner period.
One suspect tried to storm the high-end event with the aim of assassinating President Trump and other top-ranking officials who were in attendance.
Fortunately, the Secret Service agents managed to subdue the suspect before he could access the venue and arrested him.
The shocking incident triggered President Trump to publicly urge both sides to resolve their political differences peacefully and avoid stances, or rather, utterances that can trigger violence and targeted assassinations.

Days later, the president shared the post on Truth Social, targeting Jeffries, which drew criticism for keeping tensions high.
Trump told reporters that he considers Jeffries a low-IQ person after House Minority Leader heavily criticized a April 29, 2026, Supreme Court ruling that severely weakened the Voting Rights Act.
Jeffries labeled the conservative majority the “Trump court” and “illegitimate,” stating the decision is an unacceptable attempt to allow partisan gerrymandering and suppress the voting power of communities of color.
“These people have gone crazy. I heard Hakeem, a low IQ person, he’s a very low IQ, screaming today that the Supreme Court is illegitimate. I mean, that’s a dangerous statement,” Trump said.
Jeffries, a New York Democrat, has clashed with Trump for years. His allies called Trump’s post unnecessary name-calling, contradicting the call for calmer talk.
The post received thousands of likes, reposts, and replies on X in hours. Some users cracked up at the line regarding the “hug” and posted memes.
Others defended Trump’s description of Jeffries as tough political talk. Conservative accounts mocked Jeffries for being unduly sensitive, while Democratic users said the president’s words crossed the line.
Trump has often used strong nicknames and direct attacks on opponents. Jeffries has responded in kind at times, describing Trump in past interviews as someone who plays a tough guy role on television.
Melania Trump’s “Be Best” program, launched in 2018, aimed to promote kindness and health among young people. She focused on cyberbullying, opioid use, and healthy living.
Bringing the phrase back into the current feud added a personal layer to the dispute between the president and the Democratic leader.
Trump has not posted further about the matter as of Saturday afternoon.
The incident follows a familiar pattern of fast-paced online exchanges that now rule much of the daily news cycle in national politics as the country heads toward the much-anticipated midterm elections.
Democrats have accused Trump of inflaming divisions after calling for peace. Republicans argue Jeffries and other Democrats have used harsh rhetoric against the president for years and should expect pushback.
