KCB Group has retained its position as East Africa’s leading bank by capital strength after climbing 23 places to rank 549th globally in The Banker’s Top 1,000 World Banks 2026 rankings.
The latest rankings placed KCB 15th in Africa with Tier 1 (Core) Capital of US$2.455 billion, maintaining its position as the highest-ranked lender in East Africa.
According to the rankings, KCB continues to strengthen its regional influence despite growing competition across the continent, reinforcing Kenya’s position as East Africa’s leading banking hub.
“Following the release of the Banker’s top 1,000 banks report, KCB Group has moved up 23 places to bank number 549 globally, based on Tier 1 (Core) Capital. KCB remains East Africa’s leading bank by capital strength and ranks among Africa’s Top 15 banks, reinforcing its position as the region’s pre-eminent financial institution,” read part of the report.
KCB Outpaces Equity in Global Banking Rankings
Equity Group followed closely behind, ranking 16th in Africa and 573rd globally with Tier 1 capital of US$2.312 billion.
The gap between the two lenders stood at US$143 million, highlighting the continued rivalry for regional banking leadership.
Co-operative Bank of Kenya also strengthened the country’s presence in the continental rankings, placing 24th in Africa and 842nd globally with Tier 1 capital of US$1.066 billion.

Other African Banks
Outside Kenya, South Africa dominated the continental rankings, with Standard Bank Group emerging as Africa’s highest-ranked lender at 145th globally and US$16.108 billion in Tier 1 capital.
It was followed by FirstRand (178th globally) and Absa Group (203rd globally), while Nedbank Group ranked fifth in Africa and Investec South Africa placed 10th.
Morocco also had a strong showing, with Attijariwafa Bank ranking fourth in Africa, followed by Groupe Banque Populaire (sixth), Bank of Africa (seventh), Saham Bank (20th), Crédit Agricole du Maroc (21st) and Crédit Immobilier et Hôtelier (23rd).
Egypt was represented by CIB Egypt, which ranked eighth in Africa, and the Arab African International Bank, which secured 11th place.
Among Nigerian lenders, Zenith Bank ranked 12th in Africa, followed by Access Bank in 14th place, Guaranty Trust Bank in 18th and United Bank for Africa in 19th.
Elsewhere, MCB Group of Mauritius ranked 13th, Ecobank Transnational of Togo placed 17th, Banco Angolano de Investimentos of Angola ranked 22nd, while CRDB Bank of Tanzania completed Africa’s top 25 at 25th place.
