Airtel Money Announces M-Pesa Transactions Down

Airtel Kenya has issued a statement acknowledging that the telecommunications company is experiencing technical challenges.

In a statement on Wednesday, December 4, Airtel said the challenges are affecting all transactions between Airtel Money and M-Pesa.

The telecommunications company said that the affected transactions include sending money to and receiving funds from M-Pesa, making payments to M-Pesa tills, and processing pay bill payments.

“Dear Customer, please note that there are technical challenges affecting all transactions between Airtel Money and M-PESA, i.e., sending money to and receiving from M-Pesa, paying into M-Pesa tills, and paying into M-Pesa pay bills,” the statement read in part.

Airtel Money Announces M-Pesa Transactions Down

Airtel added that it is working with Safaricom to resolve the issue and will update its customers once the matter is resolved.

“We are working with the M-PESA team to resolve this on priority and will notify you once the issue is resolved,” Airtel Kenya said.

However, all other Airtel money services are working fine including the Airtel Paybills like KPLC, e-citizen, 522533, 400200 and 247247, airtime top up using Airtel Money, deposits and withdrawals including moving funds from your bank to your Airtel Money account.

“Dial *334# to access Airtel Money,” Airtel added.

Kenyans Express Frustrations Over Delayed Transactions

The statement comes after Kenyans took to social Media platforms to express their frustrations over delayed payments.

“Is there a problem with Airtel Money? I cannot send money to Safaricom numbers. And I cannot send from bank to airtel Money,” an X user by username HTC Kenya posed.

Another user Kiprotich Godwill wrote, ” I have made payments through Airtel money to an Mpesa till, but it has not gone through, yet it has deducted the amount.”

“Hello team Airtel, is there an issue with send money? I am not able to send or transact on either your app or via ussd 334,” user Nyang Zaks said.

Nyairo chimed in posing,” Why have I made 2 transactions using Airtel money and, in both, money has been deducted but it’s not reflecting on either Me and the recipient??

This comes after Airtel Kenya in November this year informed its customers that purchasing bundles through M-Pesa is experiencing intermittent issues, with some users not receiving the prompt to enter their PIN.

The company encouraged users to buy bundles directly via Airtel Money by dialing *334#, selecting the bundles option, choosing their preferred bundle, and entering their PIN.

Alternatively, customers were asked dial *544#, select their bundle, and choose the Airtel Money payment option.
