DCI Gives Update on Man Captured Shooting Protesters

A civilian firearm holder and alleged owner of Qafee Point Hotel in Mombasa was arrested by Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) and disarmed following a shooting incident at the Ganjoni area that left two people injured.

The shooting occurred at approximately 1:30 p.m. today 2nd July 2024 and prompted a swift response from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI).

The injured individuals were transported to a local hospital where they are receiving medical care.

The DCI commended the members of the public who promptly assisted the injured and ensured they received immediate medical attention.

DCI also urged the Mombasa community to remain calm as legal proceedings are underway.

“The DCI thanks members of the public who acted fast to assist the injured to hospital, and at the same time appeals to Mombasa people to be calm on this case as necessary legal action is being taken,” the DCI said in a statement.

The DCI further expressed hope for their quick recovery.

Further details about the motive behind the shooting or the identities of those involved were not immediately available. The investigation is ongoing.

DCI on Finance Bill Protests

In a statement dated July 1, DCI said groups with criminal minds took advantage of the nationwide peaceful protests organized by Kenyan youth (Gen Z) and devised schemes to cause harm and economically frustrate fellow Kenyans.

“Posing as demonstrators, the bad elements who were also well-organized earmarked several business premises including boutiques, electronic shops and supermarkets, breaking in and massively looting to the detriment of innocent business owners,” DCI said.

DCI explained that it is within its mandate as a criminal investigative agency to investigate and bring to book any persons involved in such outright criminality.

Arrest of Criminals

According to DCI, the incident robbed numerous Kenyans their means of livelihood and worked towards compromising an otherwise crucial constitutional right.

“In that regard, the DCI’s Imaging and Acoustic Unit domiciled at the National Forensic Laboratory has since retrieved numerous CCTV footages that captured identifiable persons, whose felonious acts isolates them from the hundreds of thousands that stuck to their course,” the statement read in parts.

The Investigative Agency revealed that some of the accused individuals have been arrested and arraigned in various courts across the country.

However, the DCI stated that others are still at large, ready to continue causing damage and posing a risk to Kenyans.
