Ugandan Athlete Rebecca Cheptegei’s ex -lover Dickson Ndiema has died.
Ndiema has passed away at the Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital in Eldoret (MTRH). According to the hospital, he died on Monday, September 9, night.
He had been admitted at the Intensive care unit (ICU) after attacking the Ugandan Athlete by dousing her with petrol and set her on fire.
Ndiema attacked Cheptegei at home in Trans Nzoia, leaving her with 80 percent burns that led to her death.
Moreover, the attack also injured him, leaving him with 30 percent burns.
Burial Plans for Ugandan Athlete Rebecca Cheptegei
Following her demise, Cheptegei will be buried on Saturday, September 14, in Uganda.
According to her family, plans have been made to give her a befitting send off, including a military burial.
The Athlete passed away on Thursday, September 4, night after all her organs failed.
Earlier speaking to the press, the athlete’s father, Joseph Cheptegei said the marathoner was returning from church with her two children when she was targeted by the perpetrator.
He explained that Ndiema bought five liters of petrol in Endebess on Sunday, September 1, and went to Cheptegei’s home but did not find her.
“When they returned, he began pouring petrol on the girl as she was running away. He poured it on her back before setting her ablaze,
“She shouted to her younger sister to bring her a blanket, but the man tripped the girl and threatened her with a machete, causing her to run away,” Joseph Cheptegei said.

A Land Tussle That Brewed Enemity
Cheptegei’s father narrated that the two had been embroiled in a land tussle adding that it was not the first time Ndiema had attacked the athlete.
Joseph Cheptegei stated that his daughter chose to buy land in Kenya and build a house, as she conducted most of her training there while raising her two children.
She later met Ndiema who she built a relationship with, and they ended up moving in together. However, their differences forced them to part ways.
“The two stayed together while my daughter trained in Kenya, but he is not her husband. After some time, disputes arose concerning properties, and we even have a case with the DCI.”
The 33-year-old Olympian finished 44th in the Paris games. Previously, she won gold at the World Mountain and Trail Running Championships in Chiang Mai, Thailand, in 2022.
