Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has alleged that President William Ruto appointed two Drug Barons in his cabinet.
While speaking at a church service in Nyandarua about the war on drugs in the Nyandarua region, Gachagua said that the war cannot be won if we have drug lords as cabinet secretaries.

“Na mimi nilijua serikali haikuwa na haja ya kumaliza pombe na dawa za kulevya kwa sababu sa ile walinifukuza Rais alienda akatafuta ma minister wawili ambaye wanauzanga madawa ya kulevya wakaweka kwa Cabinet. Sasa Kenya ndio pekee iko na Cabinet katika dunia iko na drug barons ambao wanakaa katika baraza la mawaziri.”
At the same time, the former Deputy President emphasized that during his tenure, the rate of drug abuse in Nyandarua County had decreased, but after he was ousted, the rate of drug abuse increased at an alarming rate, blaming President Ruto’s administration.

The former Deputy President’s allegations also came into question when two Cabinet Secretary nominees were asked about issues related to drug trafficking during their vetting, after being nominated by the Head of State.
One of the nominees who was asked the question related to drug trafficking during vetting was Hassan Ali Joho who at the time was the CS nominee of Mining, Blue Economy and Maritime Affairs.

Joho denied a 2010 report linking him to drug trafficking, in which he was indicted by the late Minister of Internal Security, Professor George Saitoti, saying he was later cleared after a thorough investigation was conducted.
“The late Saitoti came back to Parliament and tabled a report on the investigation and the outcome and it was a multi-agency international investigation that clearly stated that no iota of evidence was found against me,” Joho stated.

Further, Joho said that he conducts clean business, and part of his wealth was amassed from his family business, which engages in logistics, real estate, and trading.
William Kabogo, who was also implicated in Saitoti’s 2010 report listing suspected drug lords in Kenya, denied the allegations during his vetting as a CS nominee for ICT, saying that investigative bodies had cleared him of the accusation.
“Police did a thorough investigation and gave a report a month later. It was tabled and is part of the records in the House, and they found that I was not culpable. I had never been involved in drug trafficking, and I had never been a driver of Hon. Mwau, as that dossier had said,” Kabogo said.
