The Ministry of Education has announced the change of Half Term dates for the second term for all Pre-Primary, Primary and Secondary Schools.
In a circular copied to all County Directors of Education on May 29, 2024, Education Permanent Secretary (PS) Belio Kipsang announced that the dates have been moved to 26th and 28th June 2024.
The initial half-term dates had been scheduled to commence starting from 20th June to 23rd June.
“Following the disruption of the opening dates, it has been decided that the Half-Term dates for Term Two, 2024 be revised as follows: Original Dates 20th – 23rd June 2024; New Dates 26th -28th June 2024,” read part of the circular.

PS Kipsang said that all learners in boarding schools will be expected to report back on 30th June 2024.
Effects of New Half Term Dates
Further the Ministry noted that the change may require adjustments on planned activities and schedules.

The County Directors were also directed to communicate the content of this circular to all Head Teachers and Principals of schools under their jurisdiction.
The circular was copied to Education Cabinet Secretary Ezekiel Machogu, Teachers Service Commission (TSC) Chief Executive Officer (CEO), Kenya National Examinations Council CEO, Council of Governors CEO and Regional Directors of Education.
Second term dates for schools had been affected after the government initially postponed reopening of schools twice following widespread flooding caused by continued rains that pounded most parts of the country.

Normal reopening of schools had initially been scheduled for Monday, April 29, 2024, before CS Machogu announced postponement of the reopening to May 6, which he owed to floods.
School Reopening
Machogu at the time indicated that the reopening of schools would be extended by one week owing to the security concerns that were posed by the flooding caused by the heavy rains.
Following the initial postponement of one week, President William Ruto went ahead to extend the reopening during a state of the nation address.
The head of state later announced a new date for reopening following the advice of the Kenya Meteorological Department.

Ruto announced that schools would reopen on Monday, May 13 while speaking at State House Nairobi during a meeting with leaders from Kajiado County, noting that Kenya Met had advised on ensuring schools reopen based on weather forecast.
Ruto announced the reopening following the extended closure that was necessitated by the floods but highlighted that a prediction by the Met Department indicated that the rains are set to reduce.
