Moi University was closed immediately on October 11 this year following staff industrial action and subsequent student unrest.
Since then, different statements have circulated online regarding potential reopening dates and even the possibility of transferring students due to the institution’s financial instability.
The recent statement dated October 31 stated that Moi University is grappling with a severe financial crisis, with pending bills nearing Ksh. 10 billion.
It added that this has resulted in operational hurdles that have culminated in the closure of the institution following a strike by both lecturers and staff.
The letter went on to claim that Moi University will transfer all affected students currently in their 3rd year of study and below to other institutions.
“After a series of intensive discussions with government representatives and workers’ unions, we were unable to reach a viable solution,” read the statement in part.
“As a result, the university management is now actively engaging with the Kenya Universities and Colleges Central Placement Service (KUCCPS) to facilitate the transfer of all affected students currently in their 3rd year of study and below to other institutions. This move is essential to ensure the continuity of your academic journey.”
Moi University Flags Fake Letter
However, Moi University in its official social media accounts flagged the statement with a fake stamp attached to it to inform the students that the letter circulating and information written in it is fake.

The letter also advised affected students to monitor their student portals regularly and to cooperate fully with KUCCPS as they guide them through the transfer process.
It further noted that detailed instructions will be provided on the portal in due course and emphasized that prompt cooperation will be essential for a smooth transition.
Additionally, the flagged letter reminded students that, as outlined in the Vice Chancellor’s memo released earlier today, the graduation ceremony for the remaining two cohorts is scheduled for December 19, 2024.
“Further updates regarding this will be communicated in due time,” read the fake later.
“We recognize the difficulty and inconvenience this situation may cause and are committed to supporting each of you throughout this transition. Thank you for your understanding and cooperation.”

Govt Pledges Ksh 2.9 Billion to Institution
This comes after the university was expected to reopen on November 4, after the National Treasury committed to release Ksh. 2.9 billion to address the institution’s financial and operational needs.
National Assembly education committee chair Julius Melly said the National Treasury allocated Ksh609 million to the university this month to support scholarships, tuition and ongoing student needs.
“Some Ksh300 million will go towards scholarships this October, in addition to Ksh217 million disbursed in August. Another Ksh219.9 million will cover tuition adding to the Ksh127.2 million allocated in August,” said Melly.
“Ksh89 million will be allocated as capitation for current students, complementing the Kh269 million disbursed in August.”
The funds are expected to cover the institution’s immediate financial obligations, including the payment of Ksh. 807 million in outstanding staff salaries for the past two months.
