Ida Odinga has apologised to guests who were heckled and intimidated during the first anniversary commemoration of her late husband, former Prime Minister Raila Odinga, in Bondo, Siaya County.
In a statement on behalf of the Odinga family on October 17, Ida expressed regret over the disruptions that overshadowed the memorial held at Migwena Cultural Grounds on Thursday, October 15.
Ida Odinga criticized the conduct of individuals who disrupted the gathering, saying the incidents undermined the dignity of an occasion meant to honor Raila’s life and legacy.
“To every guest who was subjected to such treatment, I offer, on behalf of the Odinga family, our sincere and unreserved apologies,” Ida said.
The apology follows scenes of disorder at the anniversary event, where groups of youths crowded the VIP tent, interrupting speeches and prompting repeated appeals for calm.
Ida clarified that the family welcomed all guests invited to the commemoration, regardless of political affiliation.
In addition, she noted that the invitations reflected Raila’s long-standing relationships with leaders across the political divide.
According to Ida, an invitation to a family commemoration expressed fellowship, and neither attendance nor absence should be taken as disagreement with the family.
Ida Odinga Warns Politicians Against Political Rivalries
The former prime minister’s widow has called on political leaders to exercise restraint and ensure their supporters respect others despite political differences.
Ida emphasized that leaders have a responsibility to uphold order and ensure their supporters maintain dignity towards each other in politics.
She further warned against turning Raila’s resting place into a battleground for political rivalries, saying the family’s grief should not be used to settle political scores.
“His resting place must never become a battleground for political rivalries. Neither should our family’s grief be turned into an occasion for settling political scores,” Ida Odinga explained.
