Kenya Airways Cancels Flights to Two Countries

Kenya Airways (KQ) has temporarily cancelled its flights to Comoros and Mayotte.

In a statement on Saturday, December 14, Kenya Airways stated that the move was necessitated by Tropical Cyclone Chido, which is expected to hit the two islands of Comoros and Mayotte in the Indian Ocean.

According to KQ the cyclone Chido is expected to last until Monday December 16.

“To ensure the safety of our staff and customers, our flights into Comoros and Mayotte have been temporarily suspended. We sincerely apologise to our customers for the inconvenience this may cause,” read the statement in part.

“The safety of our customers and that of our staff is our number one priority. Our prayers are for the safety and wellbeing of the people that will be impacted by these adverse weather conditions.”

Kenya Airways Temporarily Suspends Flights to Comoros and Mayotte

It further mentioned that it is monitoring the weather situation and plan to resume flights o once the adverse weather conditions have improved significantly.

Here is the Full Statement: 

Tropical Cyclone CHIDO is expected to hit the islands of Comoros, and Mayotte in the Indian Ocean as well as other countries from today.

Government authorities in both countries have put out alerts in relations to the impact of the cyclone which is expected to last until Monday 16th December 2024.

To ensure the safety of our staff and customers, our flights into Comoros and Mayotte have been temporarily suspended. We sincerely apologise to our customers for the inconvenience this may cause.

The safety of our customers and that of our staff is our number one priority. Our prayers are for the safety and wellbeing of the people that will be impacted by these adverse weather conditions.

We are monitoring the weather situation and plan to resume flights on Monday, 16th December 2024, once the adverse weather conditions have improved significantly.

KQ Announces New International Route From Nairobi

This announcement comes just days after Kenya Airways (KQ) revealed plans for a new international direct route from Nairobi, set to begin in July 2025.

In a press release dated December 9, 2024, KQ announced it will offer direct flights from Nairobi to Gatwick Airport in London.

“Starting 2nd July 2025, Kenya Airways (KQ) will begin operating direct flights to London’s Gatwick Airport from its hub at Nairobi’s Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA),” the statement read in part.

According to KQ, the introduction of this route aims to increase the airline’s London frequency to ten weekly flights.
