The National Police Service (NPS) has refuted claims that police officers in Meru County arrested Meru Governor Kawira Mwangaza.
In a statement on Wednesday, October 18, the NPS termed the claims false and dispelled reports alluding that the governor was under arrest.
“Contrary to the false allegations circulating on the social media, the National Police Service wishes to clarify, that Police have not arrested Meru Governor, Hon. Kawira Mwangaza,” the statement read.
In a statement shared on Facebook, the Governor claimed that she was arrested while donating a cow to a poor family.
A video streamed live from the scene showed Mwangaza waiting in a police Land Cruiser alongside persons whose role in the engagement was yet to be revealed.
According to a prior statement, Mwangaza explained that she had just delivered a dairy cow and a prefabricated cowshed to a deserving needy family in Imenti Central Sub-County.
According to her, the donation was through an allocation under the Meru County government and is meant to uplift the lives of the less fortunate.
“It is disheartening to witness needless curtailment of development efforts meant to benefit the vulnerable in our community. Such intimidation tactics should not be allowed to obstruct progress in the Meru community,” she noted in a statement.

In a subsequent statement, Mwangaza claimed that the police officers were reluctant to take her to the police station for booking and processing.
Mwangaza faces fresh impeachment
The incident came a day after MCAs in the Meru County Assembly tabled a fresh impeachment motion against the embattled Governor.
After narrowly surviving an impeachment months after her election in 2022, Mwangaza is yet again staring at a possible exit from her office with the MCAs accusing her of misappropriation of county resources and nepotism in county appointments, among others.

Further, the MCAs accused the governor of demeaning other leaders in the county and vilification.
The impeachment motion came after days of leadership wrangles pitting different elected leaders in the county, with Mwangaza accusing senior politicians and leaders of plotting her tribulations to intimidate her.
In September, Interior Cabinet Secretary warned leaders in the county against inciting residents in their political events.
In particular, the CS banned the Okolea Initiative led by Governor Mwangaza that entailed meeting the people and distributing donations.
