The National Cohesion and Integration Commission (NCIC) has summoned Webuye West Member of Parliament Dan Wanyama over controversial remarks.
According to the commission, the MP made derogatory remarks during an interdenominational prayer event at Cheptais Boys’ High School, Bungoma County, on January 19, 2025.
Further, in an official letter dated January 22, 2025, the NCIC stated that Wanyama’s remarks during the event, which was attended by President William Ruto and other high-ranking leaders, could potentially incite feelings of hatred, hostility, or discrimination.
Moreover, the Commission quoted the MP as saying, “Hiyo mlima iliteleza na itateleza milele… sisi wote tukiungana mahali pamoja nawaambia we will isolate them, it will be us against them… na mimi sina uwoga kusema hivyo.”
This translates to “The mountain slipped and it will forever.. if we all come together and isolate them, it will be us against them, and I am not afraid to say that.”

The NCIC noted that such utterances could negatively affect harmonious coexistence between groups with different political affiliations, a violation of Section 13(1)(a) of the National Cohesion and Integration Act.
The Act prohibits statements likely to promote ethnic or political discrimination or incite violence.
“Words which are likely to incite feelings of contempt, hatred, hostility, violence, or discrimination and affect harmonious coexistence between groups of different political affiliations in Kenya, contrary to Section 13(1)(a) of the National Cohesion and Integration Act,” added NCIC.
Consequently, the MP is expected to appear before the Commission on January 29, 2025, to clarify his remarks.

Earlier on January 23, NCIC Vice Chairperson Wambui Nyutu told the press that the Commission had concluded investigations against the accused lawmakers including Oscar Sudi (Kapseret), Farah Maalim (Dadaab), and Dan Wanyama (Webuye West).
Further, they forwarded their files to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) calling for their arrest.
According to the commission, the country was headed in the wrong direction, more than two years before the General Election, with leaders having a go at each other through verbal attacks.
“We have more than 10 politicians (Farah Maalim, Dan Wanyama, and Oscar Sudi) who have been using language that can incite Kenyans.
“We have even completed our investigations and forwarded the files to DCI and if the DCI does take the next step which is to arrest and charge these criminals and the DPP takes them to court and there is prosecution, we will have made progress,” Nyutu said.
