The Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) has officially appointed Siaya Senator Oburu Oginga as the Acting Party Leader, following the death of the party’s long-serving leader and former Prime Minister Raila Amolo Odinga.
In a statement released Thursday, October 16, ODM announced that its National Executive Committee (NEC) had met and unanimously endorsed Dr. Oginga’s designation as Acting Party Leader, a decision that takes effect immediately.
“The National Executive Committee (NEC) has this morning met and unanimously endorsed the designation of the Senator of Siaya County, Dr. Oburu Oginga, as the Acting Party Leader. This appointment takes effect immediately,” the party said in a statement.
The late Raila Odinga had served as the ODM Party Leader since its formation.
Oburu Oginga Political Background
In 2022, he was elected as the Senator for Siaya County, and he is Energy Committee Chairperson in the Senate.
Odinga’s political career began in 1974 when he was elected as a councilor in Kisumu Municipality.
From 1981 to 1994, he served as an economist in the Ministry of Planning and National Development.
In 1994, he was elected as the Member of Parliament for Bondo Constituency, a seat that was previously held by his father.
He also served as the Assistant Minister of Finance in the Grand Coalition government in 2008.
From 2013 to 2017, Dr Oburu served as a nominated Member of Parliament for Bondo Constituency.
Moreover, he represented Kenya in the East Africa Legislative Assembly (EALA) as a member of parliament and commissioner from 2018-2022.

Other ODM Leaders
Oburu will lead alongside other senior ODM leaders who have been part of the party’s top leadership team under the late former Prime Minister Raila Odinga.
The leadership features several influential figures supporting the party’s operations and policy direction.
The National Chairperson, Gladys Wanga, provides strategic oversight and direction to the party, drawing on her background in governance and gender advocacy.
Serving as Deputy Party Leaders are Abdulswamad Nassir, Simba Arati, and Godfrey Osotsi.
The Secretary General, Edwin Sifuna, oversees ODM’s administrative functions and organizational structure, ensuring effective communication and coordination across the party.

Supporting him are Deputy Secretary Generals Agnes Zani and Catherine Omanyo, who play key roles in policy development, administration, and organizational efficiency.
Timothy Bosire serves as the National Treasurer, managing the party’s finances and ensuring transparency and sustainability in resource allocation.
In the party’s specialized leagues, Beth Syengo leads the Women’s League, advocating for women’s empowerment.
The Director of Campaigns, Hon. Junet Mohammed, is responsible for spearheading ODM’s electoral strategies, mobilization drives, and national campaign coordination efforts.
