Following the reported ouster of Cleophas Malala as Secretary General of the United Democratic Alliance (UDA), protests erupted outside the party’s headquarters in Nairobi.
Footage circulating online showed a large group of youth gathered to voice their opposition, holding placards that conveyed their outrage.
One notable sign read, “Bila Malala ni Tabu Kubwa,” which translates to “Without Malala, it’s a big problem.”
Additionally, the group can also be heard calling for Malala to come out and address them, saying “Tunataka Malala.”
Heavy police presence has also been observed with law enforcement officers standing guard outside the premises to ensure that the protesters do not access the building.
Joe Khalende Declares Himself New UDA SG
The protests were sparked by claims from a faction led by lawyer Joe Khalende, who asserted that Malala had been removed from office for undermining the party’s objectives.
Khalende, who has proclaimed himself the new UDA Secretary General, was seen in footage from the scene appearing injured, with a blood-stained shirt and a bandage wrapped around his head.

However, the circumstances surrounding his injury remain unclear.
Footage from inside the UDA building shows the injured lawyer being escorted by police officers to a car to be taken to a hospital, however, Joe Khalende insists on addressing the protesters.
He is overheard telling the police officers, “Wachana na mimi,” as those around him urge the police to let him deliver his speech.
Faction Demands Ouster of Cleophas Malala
This development comes a day after a faction claiming to be “founding members” stormed the UDA offices, demanding the ouster of Secretary General Cleophas Malala.
The group, led by lawyer Joe Khalende, accused Malala of sabotaging the government’s agenda and opposing the formation of a broad-based government.
“He is against the formation of a broad-based government and I’m here to confirm that he is no longer the secretary general of the UDA party.”

“I Joe Khalende will be taking over as the Secretary General of the UDA party,” he said.
“Going forward, the UDA party is going back to its members. It was formed as a people-centred party, not on individuals within the party.”
However, Malala in a statement dismissed the reports of his resignation, urging the public to ignore the “propaganda”.
He emphasized that UDA remains committed to supporting President William Ruto and the Kenya Kwanza government in achieving its manifesto.
“Ignore propaganda. The party is stable and focused on helping President William Ruto achieve his agenda for Kenya. Chama iko Imara (The party is strong),” said Malala.
