Richard Madegwa had an illustrious playing career before transitioning into coaching and other technical roles in Kenyan football.
He later coached the Kenya National Deaf Futsal Team and served as an assistant coach of the Kenya Under-17 national team.
Richard Madegwa also served as team manager of AFC Leopards, where he continued his involvement in the club after his playing career.
Richard Madegwa Football Career
Richard Khamasi Madegwa, also known as Richard “Madez” Madegwa, was a former Kenyan footballer, coach, and sports administrator who played primarily as a defender and midfielder.
Richard Madegwa represented Kenya at the international level with Harambee Stars and played club football for AFC Leopards and Kenya Breweries, now known as Tusker.
He was listed among AFC Leopards legends and played in Kenyan football in the early 1990s.
Madegwa also recalled his experiences from the period, including a 1993 league and Kenyatta Day Cup match involving Gor Mahia. He later transitioned from playing into coaching, youth development and football administration.

In September 2024, the National Heroes Council listed Khamasi Richard Madegwa from Nairobi under the Sports category in its call for objections and representations.
The listing formed part of the national-hero recognition process and was not a final declaration of national-hero status.
Coaching, Youth Development and Administration
After his playing career, Madegwa was involved in football coaching and youth development.
He co-founded KYSA International Soccer Academy with John Katana and served as its director of coaching. The Nairobi-based academy focuses on developing young people through football and social support.
Madegwa helped oversee the academy’s youth and goalkeeper programs. A sports profile also identified him and John Uma Odhiambo as former Premier League players with CAF National C licenses involved in running KYSA’s Premier and youth academies.
His football administration roles included serving as team manager of AFC Leopards in 2014.

He also served as national head coach of the Deaf Futsal Federation and coached Kenya’s national Deaf Futsal team.
Outside football, Madegwa was the managing director and owner of KYSA International Limited, a Nairobi-based electrical, mechanical and real-estate consultancy established in 2006.
He has also spoken publicly about challenges affecting Kenyan football. In an interview with The Standard, he cited favoritism, greed, and sabotage as factors that he believed were undermining the development of the sport.
