President William Ruto has responded to the incidents that happened to Butere Girls High School Play titled “Echoes of War” and issued a warning to former Kakamega senator Cleophas Malala.
“Echoes of War” took center stage during the National Drama Festival at Melvin Jones Academy in Nakuru on Thursday, April 10, 2025.

Butere Girls refused to perform the play when Malala was arrested and barred from accessing them.
Speaking on Sunday, April 13, Ruto warned that the government would not allow certain individuals to corrupt students’ minds and make them hate their leaders and their country.

“We must equally protect all our children from pedophiles, drug peddlers, and those who want to corrupt our children and teach them to hate their parents, teachers, leaders, or their nation. We must protect our children from those people,” Ruto said.
Ruto’s warning comes two days after deputy government spokesperson Mwanaisha Chidzuga claimed that Malala tried to access the student’s dormitories at night without permission from relevant authorities.

“Brother Malala, what were you doing in the girls’ dormitory, where the students are under 18, at night without the consent of the relevant authorities or their parents?” she said.
Ruto to Support All Students
Ruto said the government is investing in education because it sharpens Kenya’s human capital, which is the country’s most important asset.
He pledged to support students in their areas of strength to help them become the best version of themselves.
Some of the areas Ruto mentioned include the creative industry, academics and sports.
“We must give all our children the best opportunity to be the best they can be. Every child, formal education, technical education, the creative industry, arts and sports, we must give our children the array of what they can be. Those who are good in academics, others are good in sports, the creative economy and the arts. My administration is going to make sure that our children get the best, and we must support them.
He said headteachers, managers, and principals must ensure all students get the best opportunity.

Ruto explained that the government is deploying resources in schools, TVETs, and Universities to harness the potential that exists in Kenya’s human resource.
“That is why we are using Ksh150 billion on the education or our children. That is why I have employed 176,000 new teachers and introduced a funding model that ensures students from poor backgrounds get a bursary of between 90 and 95 percent when they join TVETs or Universities,” he said.
