President William Ruto has revealed details of two-month intense discussions with the leadership of the Ministry of Defence after former President Uhuru Kenyatta’s request and advice.
Speaking during the 60th anniversary of the Kenya Navy, in Mombasa County on Saturday, December 14, Ruto said that he got one piece of advice from Uhuru before he passed the baton of Commander in Chief of Armed Forces.
He further mentioned that the discussion centered on the ongoing efforts to modernize the military within the country which he vowed to take on.
“In the last two months I have been in discussion with the leadership of the Ministry of Defence and CDF and its team on how we can modernize the capabilities that exist in our military,” said Ruto.
“The discussion I have had with the leadership of the Ministry of Defence are on course and infact, there is only one advice that I got from the Commander-In-Chief that came before me, and he asked me when resources become available, we modernize our security agencies, and I intend to do that.”

Ruto stated that he is very confident that, having stabilized the economy and addressed the key issues, the government now needs to focus on taking charge of the cost of living, reducing inflation, stabilizing the country, and managing the exchange rates.
“Now that our housing plan and Universal Health Coverage is on course, I can now confirm that we are ready and, in a place, where we can deploy resources in the modernization of not just our police but much more importantly our military,” the Head of State reaffirmed.
“This is because progress and development going forward is going to be anchored on peace, security and stability without which all the endeavors of our nation will be in jeopardy.”

Ruto Meets Uhuru
The statement comes days after President Ruto met with the 4th President, Uhuru Kenyatta, at his Gatundu home on Monday, December 9, 2024.
This was the first private meeting between the two leaders since William Ruto became the fifth President of Kenya.

During the meeting, the two discussed matters of national interest, with Uhuru agreeing to be consulted privately or otherwise in efforts aimed at ensuring a hopeful, prosperous, united, and stable nation.
President Ruto took the opportunity to reiterate his appreciation for President Kenyatta’s statesmanship in overseeing the peaceful transfer of power after the 2022 elections.
The leaders also acknowledged Kenya’s pivotal role in promoting peace and security in the East African region through diplomatic and peace-support initiatives.
These efforts are essential in resolving conflicts, restoring peace, and fostering regional stability. President Ruto commended President Kenyatta for his patriotism and tireless contributions to peace-making in the region.
