Several people died following a tragic road accident involving a Public Service Vehicle (PSV) matatu in Ruaka, Kiambu County.
Preliminary reports indicate that the Friday, March 21, morning accident which happened in Ruaka near the Two Rivers Mall occurred when the driver of the speeding matatu operating under KIWALIRU SACCO lost control.

This was before the matatu which was heading towards the Kiambu Road direction veered off the road and landed into a ditch resulting in this tragic crash that claimed several lives.
Photos of the accident scene seen by The Kenya Times showed the matatu completely wrecked, with displaced seats, and a shattered windscreen, highlighting the severity of the crash.

Matatu accident in Ruaka
Other photos showed the first respondents at the scene struggling to free individuals trapped in the wreckage.
Preliminary reports further indicated that other passengers were rushed to Kiambu Level 5 Hospital.

The Ruaka accident is among road accidents reported this year that have left behind casualties and fatalities.

It happened just a week after 13 people lost their lives following a tragic road accident involving another PSV matatu and a trailer at the Migaa area along the Nakuru-Eldoret Highway.
The Friday, March 14 accident, which occurred at around 2 a.m. happened when the trailer lost control before ramming into the oncoming matatu, which had 11 passengers onboard.
The trailer was heading towards Eldoret while the matatu was heading towards Nairobi from Kitale.
Police said that the trailer suffered a brake failure while approaching the Migaa stretch, a notorious blackspot, resulting in a head-on collision with the PSV.
The accident instantly claimed the lives of all passengers inside the matatu and the trailer’s driver.
According to Molo Sub-County Police Commander Timon Odingo, the deceased included eight men, four women and a minor.
Crashes in 2025
Earlier in February, four people died while 56 others were left nursing injuries following an accident involving a bus and a trailer along the Londiani – Muhoroni road.

The accident, which happened on Monday, February 25 night near Ogona junction, involved a Nyaugenya bus operating under Climax SACCO full of passengers which collided head-on with the oncoming trailer.
A Police report indicated that the Nyaugenya bus which was headed towards Londiani direction enroute to Nairobi veered off the road resulting into collision with the oncoming truck before landing into a sugarcane farm.
Three female passengers and one male died on the spot as 56 others who sustained injuries were rushed to St. Vincent Mission Hospital, Koru Mission Hospital, Muhoroni Sub-County Hospital.
Four of them were later transferred to the Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Teaching and Referral Hospital (JOOTRH) in Kisumu for specialized treatment.
