Standard Chartered Bank Kenya has announced the appointment of two new members to its Board of Directors in a bid to strengthen the financial institution.
In a notice on August 15, Standard Chartered Bank announced the appointment of Beverly Spencer Obatoyibo as an Independent Non-Executive Director and Edith Chumba as an Executive Director.
“The Board of Directors is pleased to announce the appointment of Mrs. Beverley Spencer-Obatoyinbo as an Independent Non-Executive Director of Standard Chartered Bank Kenya Limited,” read part of the notice.
“The Board of Directors is pleased to announce the appointment of Ms. Edith Chumba as an Executive Director of Standard Chartered Bank Kenya Limited.”
Both appointments are subject to the approval of the Central Bank of Kenya and the Capital Markets Authority and will take effect once the approvals are received.
According to the bank, Beverley is set to bring to the Board over 30 years of extensive global business and leadership experience in the pharmaceutical, manufacturing and Fast-Moving Consumer Goods sectors.
Beverley Spencer-Obatoyinbo joins Standard Chartered Board
She was previously the Managing Director of the British American Tobacco (BAT) Kenya Plc where she was charged with the responsibility of leading the BAT businesses in East and Central Africa.
In her 25 years at BAT, Beverley held various leadership positions across multiple markets in Africa, Middle East and Europe. Beverley has consistently delivered transformational growth strategies leading to enhanced and sustainable business performance and operational excellence in complex markets.
“Her diverse, global outlook and tested experience in implementing sustainability practices will be invaluable to the Bank’s continued success,” said Standard Chartered Bank.

Prior to her appointment, Beverley served as a Non-Executive Director on the boards of WPP-Scangroup Pic, the BAT Nigeria Foundation and previously served on the board of the Kenya Association of Manufacturers.
She holds a Diploma in Advanced Strategic Management from the International Institute for Management Development, Switzerland, and a Diploma in Customer-Focused Innovation from Stanford Executive Business School, USA.
The new board member attended Wolfson School of Nursing in Westminster, UK, later specializing in Oncology at The Royal Marsden Hospital, London.
Edith Chumba
On the other hand, Edith Chumba has had a sterling career with over 20 years’ experience in the banking industry in Kenya.

She has held various leadership positions since joining the Bank in 2015, culminating in her current role as the Head of Wealth and Retail Banking (WRB), Kenya and East Africa, a position she has held since 2019.
“Edith has been instrumental in leading the transformation of the WRB business and in overseeing the delivery of turnaround strategies,” the Bank said.
Prior to her appointment, Edith served as a Director on the Board of Standard Chartered Bancassurance Intermediary Limited.
The new board member holds a Bachelor of Commerce degree from the University of Nairobi, a Postgraduate Diploma in Sales and Marketing from the Chartered Institute of Marketing, UK, and a Master of Business Administration degree from the University of Sunderland.
Her extensive experience, wealth of knowledge and demonstrated transformational leadership is set to continue to contribute greatly to the achievement of the Standard Chartered Bank’s strategic priorities.
