Following the African Nations Championship (CHAN) 2024 kick-off, Kenya is not just celebrating football but also experiencing a remarkable economic surge.
Nairobi, one of the host cities, has transformed into a hive of activity, with local businesses across various sectors reaping big from the influx of fans, teams, and officials.
With thousands of fans streaming into Nairobi from within Kenya and neighbouring countries like Uganda and Tanzania, the transport industry is enjoying a major boost.
Road transport has seen increased activity as fans travel to and from match venues, the Moi International Sports Centre (MISC) Kasarani and Nyayo Stadiums.
Local taxi-hailing apps, boda boda riders, and matatus are also registering increased trips, ferrying fans around the city and to the stadiums.
Kenya Airways and other domestic airlines are also benefiting, as visitors flying into Nairobi contribute to a rise in passenger numbers.
This increased mobility is generating income for drivers, mechanics, fuel stations, and service providers across the sector.
Small businesses thrive outside stadiums hosting CHAN 2024 matches
Outside match venues, small-scale traders are taking advantage of the football frenzy to boost their sales. Stalls selling team jerseys, miniature flags, scarves, whistles, vuvuzelas, and caps are doing brisk business.
These items, especially for teams playing in Nairobi like Kenya, Morocco, Angola, DR Congo, and Zambia, are in high demand. Fans are eager to show support by donning team colours, creating a thriving market for merchandise.
Hawkers have also capitalised on the foot traffic around the stadiums, selling snacks, refreshments, and souvenirs. Some traders have ventured into selling small electronics and accessories like phone chargers and earphones to cater to the visiting fans.

Local artisans are showcasing their creativity through handmade items that blend Kenyan culture with football themes. Beaded necklaces, Maasai shukas, wooden carvings, and other crafts are proving popular with tourists looking for memorabilia.
Hotels, guesthouses, and Airbnbs in Nairobi and surrounding towns are experiencing high demand. Many hospitality establishments are fully booked, prompting some to increase their rates to match the growing demand.
Temporary jobs have emerged, with hotels hiring additional staff to cope with the pressure. From housekeeping to catering, hundreds of young people are being absorbed into short-term roles that provide much-needed income.
Local eateries and food joints near the stadiums are also seeing increased traffic. Visiting fans are dining out more frequently, boosting profits for small food vendors and restaurants.
The food and beverage sector, especially around Kasarani and other match venues, is among the biggest beneficiaries of the tournament.
Government endorsement of economic impact
Speaking ahead of the tournament, Sports Cabinet Secretary Salim Mvurya highlighted the broader economic gains of hosting CHAN 2024. He noted that beyond the excitement on the pitch, the tournament presents immense opportunities in tourism, job creation, and trade.
“We have a mandate to work with young people, to help them realize their potential by creating an enabling environment — both through supportive policy and legislation,” Mvurya said.
The tournament is expected to create thousands of temporary jobs. Kenya needs at least 3,000 people to work as volunteers, team guides, or in security during the month-long competition.

Match days especially mean increased business for photographers, stadium ushers, chauffeurs, caterers, and event support staff. Local media houses are also benefiting from increased advertising as brands seek visibility during the high-profile event.
With Nairobi hosting matches, the tournament is also helping boost tourism. Visitors are not only attending games but also exploring the city’s landmarks and cultural attractions.
Tour guides, curio shop owners, and travel companies are seeing increased bookings and inquiries. This ripple effect is energising Nairobi’s tourism economy while creating more avenues for income generation.
Group A matches
Kenya’s second Group A clash against Angola will take place on Thursday, August 7, at 7:00 PM at Kasarani Stadium.
Fresh from a 1-0 win over the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) on Sunday, Harambee Stars is eyeing back-to-back victories on home soil. The first match, however, raised questions after some stadium sections remained visibly empty despite high public interest.
