The Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) has clarified that taxpayers unable to file VAT or PAYE returns on the iTax platform because the system shows they are not registered for these returns must first update their tax obligations.
According to KRA, the error message appears when the relevant tax obligation has not been activated on a taxpayer’s iTax profile, preventing the filing of the respective return.
Taxpayers are required to update their tax obligation information in their iTax accounts before they can proceed with filing.
“You need to update your tax obligation information in your iTax account to enable you to file,” KRA answered.

How to Include Your Source of Income
To add or remove a tax obligation, navigate to the Tax Obligation Details section of the amendment form.
Taxpayers can register for obligations such as Value Added Tax (VAT), Pay As You Earn (PAYE), Rental Income Tax, Turnover Tax, and Excise Duty.
Those seeking to have an obligation canceled must apply for cancellation and provide a valid reason.
Kenyans who need to update their source of income should select the Source of Income section in the amendment form.
They can then indicate whether their income is derived from employment, business activities, or rental property. Depending on the selected category, additional information may be required, including an employer’s KRA PIN, business details, or the type of rental property involved.
Supporting documents such as appointment letters, business registration certificates, tenancy agreements, or proof of property ownership may also be requested.
Once submitted, the application will be reviewed by KRA before the changes are reflected on the taxpayer’s profile.
