Requirements for Starting a Petrol Station in Kenya

The petrol station business is a fast-growing enterprise in Kenya. They sell petroleum fuels like diesel, and motor spirit (premium petrol to vehicle owners.  Offering oil checks, repairs, and car service.

Additionally, they also deal with engine lubricants, cooking gas, and kerosene.

For any entrepreneur who wants to start a Petrol station business, it is important to have proper licensing and registration.

Besides having a business plan, the County government permits, the entrepreneur must meet Energy Petroleum Regulatory Authority requirements and capital.

The leading oil marketing brands include Vivo, Total Energies, Rubies, Ola Energy, Oryx, Stabex, Galana, Lake Oil, and Hass Petroleum Company.

Before Starting a Petrol Station Business

First, think about the business idea, and come up with a detailed research and proposal to be evaluated by the county government.

 It should contain an overview of the challenges and opportunities.

Additionally, an entrepreneur should gain knowledge about location, customer target, and concepts that affect demand and supply chain.

Most of the petrol stations are located in major cities, highways, and suburbs which are the right locations.

Further, starting capital is a crucial part before venturing into any business. Ask relevant questions about the business from Petrol Station entrepreneurs.

  1. County Government requirements

After an evaluation of the business plan proposal by the County government, you will need a construction permit from the relevant authorities.

You will apply for a construction permit, obtain a notification of inspection, have the premises ready for inspection, and obtain a notice to collect the license.

  1. EPRA Requirements

The Energy and Petroleum Regulatory Authority (EPRA) a number of requirements applicants should consider before issuance of permit.

Applicants should have copies of their national IDs, proof of land ownership of a legitimate lease agreement, and a Valid EIA license from the environment authority NEMA.

Certificate of Incorporation / Business Registration Certificate (for the firm developing the land)

Moreover, permits to construct auxiliary lanes from relevant authorities like Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) or Kenya Urban Roads Authority (KURA).

Including, Permission to undertake construction from the County Physical Planning Office, and detailed construction drawings of petrol station design from certified engineers.

In Kenya, a review of your application can take 45 days or less after which you are allowed to start your construction.

EPRA does not charge for any fee for Petroleum Construction Permits issued.

How to apply Online

To apply for online services, log in to the EPRA website and follow the following easy steps.

  1. Click Create Account
  2. Click on License Management then select “New License Application”
  3. Select the preferred Category in this case – petroleum retail station
  4. Read and accept the permit conditions provided and click on the “Proceed with registration icon”
  5. . Follow the application process step by step by filling in the required information and click “Save”
  6. Attach the required documents as per the permit category and submit the application.
