Safaricom has clarified why some popular data bundle offers may not be available to all subscribers, addressing a common concern among customers over the availability of promotional data packages.
The telecommunications company explained the issue after questions emerged about why certain offers are accessible to some users but not others.
In a post on June 23, a Safaricom customer, El Paso, questioned why a popular 2GB data bundle costing KSh100 is no longer available on his line.
The customer said he now has to spend more money on data after the offer disappeared from the menu.
Further, the customer also complained that Safaricom no longer sends birthday gifts to subscribers, asking the company to explain the changes.
“I can’t be spending 200 Bob because you guy’s have removed the 1 option I used to Subscribe for data 2GB 24hrs for Ksh 100 explain to me why I no longer receive that services becasue why not even birthday gift you no longer send to your clients,” he questioned.
Why Customers Receive Different Data Bundle Offers
In response, Safaricom said its offers are not permanent and change periodically. The telecommunications firm explained that the process is automated and customers can only access the offers displayed on their lines at a given time.
According to Safaricom, when customers dial the code to purchase data bundles, they are presented with the offers currently available to them. This means some bundles may be added, removed, or replaced over time.
“The offers keep changing periodically and the process is automated. When you dial the procedure to purchase, you can only select from the offers available on the list presented at the time,” the telcom company explained.

Why do data bundles run out faster
In an earlier post, Safaricom explained that many smartphones consume data even when users are not actively browsing. Background processes, automatic app updates, and content synchronization all contribute to mobile data consumption, even when the user is not actively using their phone.
This happens through background data, which allows apps to refresh, sync, update, and upload content automatically while the phone screen is off.
On Android devices, users can check which applications are consuming the most data by navigating to Settings → Data Usage, where both foreground and background usage are displayed per app.
Apps such as social media platforms, cloud storage services, photo backup tools, and messaging apps are among the biggest contributors to hidden data consumption. For example, photo apps may automatically upload images in the background, while social media apps preload images and videos to improve the user experience.

Tips on how to reduce mobile data usage
To help customers make their data last longer, Safaricom advises restricting background data usage for apps that do not require constant internet access. The company says this can significantly reduce unnecessary data consumption on both Android and iPhone devices.
The telecommunications firm also recommends updating apps only when connected to Wi-Fi. Automatic app updates using mobile data can consume large amounts of data without users noticing.
Additionally, Safaricom encourages customers to monitor data usage on data-heavy apps, reduce video streaming quality on platforms such as YouTube, disable automatic media downloads on WhatsApp, and turn off autoplay on social media apps. These measures can help users make their data bundles last longer.
