Jambojet has grown into one of Kenya’s most recognisable low-cost airlines, carrying millions of passengers since it began operations in 2014.
But behind the airline’s separate brand, aircraft and growing domestic network is a less visible corporate structure.
Jambojet is wholly owned by Kenya Airways Plc, making the low-cost carrier a fully controlled subsidiary of Kenya’s national airline.
Kenya Airways’ latest audited financial statements for 2025 list Jambojet Limited among the company’s subsidiaries and show that KQ holds 100 per cent of the airline’s equity, represented by one million shares.
The accounts also show that Kenya Airways has fully impaired the KSh606 million carrying value of its investment in Jambojet. An impairment in accounting terms does not mean that Kenya Airways has sold its stake or that Jambojet has ceased operating. Rather, it means KQ no longer carries the investment at that value on its balance sheet.
Jambojet therefore remains firmly within the Kenya Airways group.
How Jambojet Became Part of Kenya Airways
Jambojet was established in 2014 as a low-cost airline aimed at making air travel more accessible to passengers travelling within Kenya and the wider region.
The airline has since developed its own brand and operating model while remaining under the ownership of Kenya Airways.
Jambojet says it has flown more than 10 million passengers since launching operations, with 44 per cent of those travellers taking their first flight.
Its current network includes Nairobi, Mombasa, Kisumu, Eldoret, Malindi, Ukunda and Lamu, while the airline also operates regional services.
The company currently operates a fleet of 11 De Havilland Canada Dash 8-400 aircraft.
Its growth has made Jambojet an important part of the wider Kenya Airways business.
Kenya Airways’ 2024 annual report described Jambojet as a key part of the group, reporting that the subsidiary carried 1.26 million passengers, up from 1.21 million in 2023.
The report also said Jambojet recorded a 16 per cent increase in total revenue during the year.

Kenya Airways has Financial Links to Jambojet
The relationship between the two airlines extends beyond shareholding.
Kenya Airways’ financial disclosures show that the parent company has provided financial support connected to Jambojet’s borrowing.
In 2024, Jambojet obtained a loan from NCBA. Kenya Airways provided a corporate guarantee in support of the facility.
The arrangement demonstrates that the relationship between the two airlines is not limited to Kenya Airways holding Jambojet shares.
KQ has also continued to provide services to its subsidiary.
Kenya Airways’ 2025 accounts recorded management fees received from Jambojet, showing another financial connection between the parent company and the low-cost carrier.
These transactions are significant because they show how Jambojet operates as part of a wider corporate group rather than as a completely independent airline.
Jambojet Expansion
Despite operating under the Kenya Airways umbrella, Jambojet has developed a distinct low-cost carrier identity.
The airline has expanded its network, added frequencies on existing routes and opened regional connections.
Its Mombasa hub has also enabled direct flights between the coastal city and destinations such as Kisumu and Eldoret, reducing the need for some passengers to travel through Nairobi.
Kenya Airways’ 2024 annual report noted that Jambojet operated to nine destinations, including seven domestic destinations in Kenya and two international destinations at the time.

A subsidiary with its Own Identity
Jambojet operates under its own name and has its own fleet, routes and management structure.
Its website describes it as a subsidiary of Kenya Airways and says the airline was created to make air travel more accessible and affordable.
The low-cost airline has its own passengers, routes, aircraft and commercial operations, but its ultimate corporate position remains tied to Kenya Airways through the 100 per cent ownership structure.
More than a decade after its launch, the carrier has become a major player in Kenya’s domestic aviation market.
But the ownership has remained with Kenya Airways.
The latest KQ financial statements provide the clearest picture: Kenya Airways owns all 1 million shares in Jambojet, giving it complete equity ownership of the low-cost carrier.
The structure means that while travellers may book a Jambojet flight separately from Kenya Airways, the two airlines remain connected at the corporate level.
Jambojet is therefore not a separate airline group competing with Kenya Airways as an unrelated company.
It is a wholly owned company within the Kenya Airways group, with the government connection arising through KQ’s majority government shareholding.
