Two elite Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT) officers serving in Haiti alongside the the Multinational Security Support (MSS) Mission in Haiti died on Tuesday, August 19, 2025.
Haitian National Police (PNH) said the Haitian officers were killed, and two others were injured after a tragic explosion caused by a kamikaze drone.
PNH said the drone was reportedly being carried by civilians when it exploded.
United States (U.S) Deputy Secretary of State Christopher Landau expressed his condolences after the incident.
In a statement, Landau said the officers died while protecting their country, and the U.S government will continue supporting Haiti.
I just spoke to Haitian Prime Minister Fils-Aimé to express condolences for the death of two Haitian National Police SWAT officers. They died trying to protect their country from criminal gangs. The US and many other nations stand steadfastly with those seeking to restore law and order in Haiti.
The U.S. Embassy in Haiti said it was saddened by the death of the two officers who have been critical in the fight against gangs in Haiti.
In a statement, the Embassy said the officers sacrifice to Haiti will never be forgotten.
We are deeply saddened by the tragic loss of two courageous SWAT team officers and the injuries sustained by others from the Haitian National Police. These brave officers have made invaluable contributions to combating gangs and improving security conditions in Haiti.
U.S Govt to Support Haiti
The Embassy said the U.S stands with the Government of Haiti in honouring their dedication to protecting their country.
Further, is stated that the U.S will remain steadfast in its support to the HNP and its SWAT teams in the fight against terrorist organizations that continue to destabilize Haiti.
Charge d’affaires Wooster and the U.S. Embassy extend heartfelt condolences to their families, friends, and fellow officers. The United States reaffirms its commitment to supporting Haiti in restoring peace and security.

Kenyan Police Officers Injured
Two Kenyan police officers in Haiti were injured during an attack by Haitian gangs on April 1, 2025.
The officers were hurt during routine patrols in and around the capital, Port-au-Prince.
This was after another Kenyan police officer sustained injuries during an operation on March 18, 2025.

One Dead Another Missing
So far, Kenya has lost one officer, Samuel Tompoi Kaetuai, who died on February 23 while receiving treatment at Aspen Level 2 Hospital.
Tompoi was injured during an operation at Pont Sonde, in the Artibonite department and succumbed to injuries.
Besides, Benedict Kabiru, a Kenyan police officer, is still after a gang ambush in Port-au-Prince’s Pont-Sonde Area of Haiti in March.
