The opening of a newly constructed luxury safari camp in the Maasai Mara National Reserve on the Kenya-Tanzania border has been contested by the Institute of Maasai Education Research and Conservation (MERC), a nonprofit organization registered in Kenya and the United States.
Under the auspices of Marriott International, American multinational company Ritz-Carlton Luxury Hotels & Resorts is set to unveil its first safari property in August along the banks of the Sand River.
The massive Ritz-Carlton, Masai Mara Safari Camp promises unrivalled views of the Mara-Serengeti ecosystem, including the much-prized great wildebeest migration.
Institute of Maasai Education Research and Conservation issues demands
However, MERC Director Dr. Meitamei Olol Dapash, in a demand letter, opposes the construction of the camp, stating that it sits on a vital wildlife migration corridor.
“This site is globally recognized as one of the most vital wildlife migration corridors on Earth, and its ecological and cultural importance is irreplaceable I have personally studied and known this sacred territory for decades. Until your project began, this location was a habitat for endangered black rhinos and large herds of buffalo. Its desecration is a tragedy and a scandal,” reads part of the letter.
“Your development has raised urgent legal, environmental, and ethical concerns.”
Olol Dapash made several demands to Marriott International, including full disclosure of land lease and user agreements, certified copies of permits issued by the National Environment Management Authority (NEMA) and verifiable evidence that meaningful consultations were conducted with local Maasai communities.

The MERC Director has given Marriott International 14 days from Thursday, July 24, to respond with all supporting documentation.
In the letter, avenues of recourse that have been outlined include legal proceedings in Kenya’s Environment and Land Court (ELRC), formal complaints to United Nations (UN) agencies, international tourism regulators and the global conservation community, and international media exposure.
