Former Nairobi governor Mike Sonko has been disqualified by the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) from vying for the Mombasa Governor seat.
IEBC Chairman Wafula Chebukati while addressing the media on Saturday, June 4 said that candidates who have been impeached previously from public office are disqualified from contesting in an election.
Moreover, former Kiambu Youth Executive Karungo Thang’wa who was vying for the Kiambu Senate seat has also been disqualified on grounds that he had been impeached from office before.
Besides, in disqualifying former Nairobi governor Mike Sonko and Thang’wa, Chebukati cited Article 75(3) which states: “A person who is removed from office on contravention of Chapter 6 of the Constitution is disqualified from holding any other State or public office whether elective or appointive.”
“The Commission’s position is that Article 75 of the Constitution is self-speaking and self-executing…. Therefore, the three candidates who have been removed from public office through impeachment are disqualified from contesting in the elections,” Chebukati stated.
