The Kenya Urban Roads Authority (KURA) has announced a partial closure of Outer Ring Road on Saturday, September 5, 2026.

The closure will run from 12:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. to facilitate the removal of a gantry at the location identified in KURA’s traffic advisory.

KURA has advised motorists to plan their journeys accordingly and apologized for any inconvenience caused by the temporary closure.

“Motorists are informed of a partial closure of Outer Ring Road on Saturday, 5th September 2026, from 12:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m., to facilitate removal of a gantry at the location indicated in the attached sketch. We apologize for any inconvenience caused,” read part of the statement.

KURA Sets Three-Phase Closure of Outer Ring Road

KURA’s traffic management plan places the works on Outer Ring Road near the Airport North Road junction in Nairobi, where an overhead gantry will be dismantled.

The operation will be undertaken in stages, beginning with the positioning of machinery between 12:00 p.m. and 1:00 p.m. During this period, traffic will remain open, but motorists will be required to slow down as equipment is moved into place.

A full closure of the affected section will follow between 1:00 p.m. and 2:00 p.m. to provide a safe working area for the removal of the gantry.

Traffic will resume from 2:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m., although motorists will continue to observe reduced speeds as crews remove equipment and clear the site.

The traffic map highlights Outer Ring Road and surrounding routes, including Airport North Road, Thika Road, Juja Road, Jogoo Road and Manyanja Road. It also provides a close-up of the work area, showing the gantry location and points where traffic will be controlled.

Alternative Routes

Motorists can avoid the affected section by using Mombasa Road, Airport South Road or Airport North Road, depending on their destination.

Drivers coming from the CBD or Thika Road can join Mombasa Road and connect to Airport South Road, before proceeding to Airport North Road and avoiding the affected junction.

Motorists travelling along Outer Ring Road from the Thika Road direction can also divert through Enterprise Road and connect to Mombasa Road before reaching the closure point.

What Is a Road Gantry?

A road gantry is an overhead structure built across a road, usually supported by columns on either side. It provides a platform for mounting equipment that needs to be positioned above or alongside traffic lanes.

How Gantries Are Used

  • Traffic signs: Gantries support large directional signs, speed limits, and other road information visible to motorists.
  • Traffic monitoring: Cameras and sensors mounted on gantries can be used to monitor traffic flow and detect violations.
  • Electronic tolling: On some highways, gantries are fitted with equipment that identifies vehicles or reads electronic toll tags for automated toll collection.
  • Traffic management: They can also carry variable message signs and other equipment used to provide motorists with real-time road information.
